NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) conducted the 2016 Economic Census for Business Activity

  SBJ and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, conducted the 2016 Economic Census for Business Activity as of June 1, 2016. Economic Census for Business Activity was first conducted in 2012 in response to the diversification of economic activities, and conducted for the second time in 2016.
  Economic Census for Business Activity aims to reveal the economic activities of establishments and enterprises in Japan at the national and regional levels by thoroughly investigating financial survey items such as sales (income) and expenses across all industries at the same point in time. Moreover, this survey also provides a population for statistical surveys on establishments and enterprises.

Survey Process
[Survey by enumerators (for single-unit establishments)]

  • May 20th -31th
    Enumerators provided single-unit establishments with questionnaire forms
  • June 1st -
    " Enumerators began collecting questionnaire forms
  • May 20th - June 7th (Online Survey Prioritization)
    Online participation via PCs

[Survey by direct mailing (for enterprises with head and branch offices)]

  • Mid May-end of May
    Relevant authorities mailed questionnaire forms only to head offices.
  • June 1st -24th
    Questionnaire forms were returned by mail or via the Internet.

The preliminary results (industry common matters) of the economic census are scheduled to be released by the end of May 2017, with detailed results released in sequence from September 2017.

Unincorporated Enterprise Survey (Trend survey) (January to March 2016)

  • The sales per establishment for January-March 2016 increased by 5.1% in "Manufacturing" and 10.3% in "Accommodations and food services", and decreased by 1.0% in "Wholesale and retail trade" and 7.6% in "Services", respectively over the previous year (corresponding period).
  • The net operating profit per establishment for January-March 2016 increased by 15.1% in "Manufacturing" and 12.1% in "Accommodations and food services" and decreased by 10.4% in "Wholesale and retail trade", and 4.1% in "Services", respectively over the previous year (corresponding period).

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (April 2016)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 731,587, a decrease of 32,709 (4.3%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 389,394, a decrease of 14,733 (3.6%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 342,193, a decrease of 17,976 (5.0%) from the previous year.
  • The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 689,155, a decrease of 35,484 (4.9%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 366,905, a decrease of 16,471 (4.3%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 322,250, a decrease of 19,013 (5.6%) from the previous year.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Two-or-more-person Households : April 2016)

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for April 2016 was 298,520 yen, down 0.7% in nominal terms and down 0.4% in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 480,098 yen, up 0.7% in nominal terms and up 1.0% in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 338,001 yen, up 1.1% in nominal terms and up 1.4% in real terms from the previous year.

"Labour Force Survey (Basic Tabulation)" (April 2016)

  • The number of employed persons in April 2016 was 63.96 million, an increase of 540 thousand or 0.9% from the previous year.
