New Director-General of the Statistics Bureau

On July 31, 2015, Mr. Masato AIDA was appointed as Director-General of the Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ), succeeding Mr. Satohisa INAMI.
In his career, Mr. Aida has been engaged in a number of statistical related activities, including serving as Director, General Affairs Division, SBJ, from July 2010 to September 2012, and as Director-General, Statistical Survey Department, SBJ, from September 2012 to July 2015.

- As of July 1, 2015 (Provisional estimates)

- The total population was 126.95 million, a decrease of 0.18 million (0.15%) from the previous year.
- As of February 1, 2015 (Final estimates)
[Total Population]
- The total population was 126,991 thousand, a decrease of 195 thousand (0.15%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 0 to 14 was 16,191 thousand, a decrease of 156 thousand (0.95%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 15 to 64 was 77,475 thousand, a decrease of 1,087 thousand (1.38%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 65 and over was 33,325 thousand, an increase of 1,047 thousand (3.25%) from the previous year.
Japanese population was 125,319 thousand, a decrease of 308 thousand (0.25%) from the previous year.

" Annual Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (2014)
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) decreased for the first time since 2012, and inter- and intra-prefectural migrants was the lowest on record.
- The number of positive net-migration (Japanese) for Tokyo-to increased for the third straight year, and the number for Chiba-ken increased for the second straight year.
- The number of positive net-migration (Japanese) for Tokyo Area increased by 12,884 persons. Nagoya Area and Osaka Area had negative net-migration for the second straight year.
The total number of negative net-migration (Japanese) for Iwate-ken, Miyagi-ken and Fukushima-ken was 2,974, and compared with the previous year, negative net-migration decreased by 1 person in these areas.

- The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 370,989, an increase of 27,599 (8.0%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 161,049, an increase of 11,281 (7.5%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 209,940, an increase of 16,318 (8.4%) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants (Japanese) was 343,704, an increase of 22,804 (7.1%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 147,987, an increase of 8,855 (6.4%) from the previous year.
The number of intra-prefectural migrants (Japanese) was 195,717, an increase of 13,949 (7.7%) from the previous year.

- The number of employed persons in June 2015 was 64.25 million, an increase of 360 thousand or 0.6% from the previous year.
- The number of unemployed persons in June 2015 was 2.24 million, a decrease of 210 thousand or 8.6% from the previous year.
The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 3.4%.

Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households
The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for June 2015 was 268,652 yen, down 1.5% in nominal terms and down 2.0% in real terms from the previous year.
Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households
The average of monthly income per household stood at 733,589 yen, up 3.3% in nominal terms and up 2.8% in real terms from the previous year.
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 293,042 yen, down 0.9% in nominal terms and down 1.4% in real terms from the previous year.

- The consumer price index for Japan in June 2015 was 103.8 (2010=100), down 0.2% from the previous month, and up 0.4% over the year.
The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo in July 2015 (preliminary) was 102.0 (2010=100), down 0.2% from the previous month, and up 0.2% over the year.

2014 National Survey of Family Income and Expenditure (Major Durable Goods Tabulation)
- For ownership quantities, "High efficiency water heaters" and "Solar power generation systems" had high increasing rates, compared to the previous time (2009).
- For ownership rates, "High efficiency water heaters" and "Air-cleaning devices" increased greatly, compared to the previous time.
- Looking at ownership rates of "Air-cleaning devices" by the household heads' age group, those in the 30s were higher than those in any other age groups.
Looking at ownership rates of "Solar power generation systems" by region, those in the Miyazaki and Saga prefectures in the Kyushu district were high.
