RECENT RELEASE

Fiscal 2012 Budget for the Statistics Bureau and the Director-General for Policy Planning (Statistical Standards) Approved

The Japanese government's budget for fiscal year 2012 was passed by the Diet on April 5, 2012. The budget, only including general account, amounts to 90.3 trillion yen. Besides this general account there are special accounts, one of which is for reconstruction related to the Great East Japan Earthquake. This account totals 3.8 trillion yen.

The total budget for the Statistics Bureau and the Director-General for Policy Planning (Statistical Standards) is approximately 24.0 billion yen, a decrease of 3.1 billion yen compared with the previous fiscal year. This is not including regular personnel expenses.

The major reason for this decrease is a decrease of the cost for the 2012 Economic Census for Business Activity. The promotion of efficiency in administrative work also contributes to the decrease.

On the other hand, in order to allow for improvement of the accessibility of statistical data, the operation cost for Inter-Ministry Information System for Official Statistics increases.
