NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The Headquarters for Implementation of the 2010 Population Census has started up



   On October 1, 2009, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), to which the Statistics Bureau belongs, started up the Headquarters for Implementation of the 2010 Population Census headed by Mr. Kazuhiro HARAGUCHI, Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications. This Headquarters facilitates the smooth and correct implementation of the Census, and provision of accurate and useful data to the public.

   The 2010 Population Census, which will enumerate all the persons living in Japan, is scheduled as of October 1, 2010. The Census is expected to provide statistical information indispensable for policy-making to cope with important issues in a society with a declining population. Especially, the Census will clarify the actual situation with regard to various aspects such as the declining birthrate, the aging population, employment, and regional differences.

   The Headquarters consists of the executives of the MIC including Minister, Vice-ministers, and all the Director-Generals of the bureaus of the MIC. The Headquarters will function from October 1, 2009 until March 31, 2011. Its main functions are as follows:

   i) To cope with important issues in the implementation of the Census,
   ii) To solicit cooperation for the Census and to promote comprehensive publicity, and
   iii) To promote dissemination of the results of the Census.
