Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Total Households) Results in 2008


   The yearly average of monthly consumption expenditure per household was 261,306 yen, down 0.1% in nominal terms and 1.7% in real terms from the previous year, showing a decrease after an interval of two years. The yearly average of monthly consumption expenditure for workers' households increased by 0.6% in nominal terms but decreased by 1.0% in real terms.
   The yearly average of monthly income per workers' household was 486,805 yen, up 1.4% in nominal terms but down 0.2% in real terms from the previous year. Among income categories, the regular incomes of household heads decreased by 0.3%, and temporary incomes and bonuses decreased by 3.8% in real terms.
   Among expenditures for goods and services, average spending on goods decreased by 0.9% in real terms from the previous year. A further breakdown reveals that spending on durable goods increased by 4.3% in real terms, but that on semi-durable and non-durable goods decreased by 1.8% and 1.3% in real terms respectively, while spending on services decreased by 0.9% in real terms.
