Labour Force Survey Results in 2008

   

Employment

   According to the Labour Force Survey, the annual average number of employed persons in 2008 was 63.85 million, a decrease of 270 thousand from the previous year for the first time in five years.
   The number of male employed persons decreased by 240 thousand from the previous year for the first time in four years, while the female figure decreased by 30 thousand from the previous year for the first time in six years.
   With regard to the number of employed persons by main industry, "Medical, health care and welfare", "Information and communications" and "Services" increased from the previous year, while "Manufacturing" and "Construction" declined.

   

Unemployment

    The total number of unemployed persons was 2.65 million, an increase of 80 thousand from the previous year for the first time in six years.
    The annual average unemployment rate was 4.0%, an increase of 0.1 point from the previous year for the first time in six years.
