Technical Cooperation to Statistics Indonesia (BPS)

     Statistics Bureau of Japan has implemented technical cooperation projects to Statistics Indonesia, Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) in Indonesian, in earnest since 1980 mostly through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). Hereafter referred to "Statistics Bureau of Japan" as "the Bureau" and to "a technical cooperation project" as "the Project".

Technical Cooperation to 1980 Population Census
     Firstly, in 1980, the Bureau dispatched two officers to the BPS as a statistical adviser in order to cooperate to improve 1980 Population Census in Indonesia and until 1986 dispatched four officers in total for 1980 Population Census as a long stay through JICA. And the Bureau conducted also trainings for the BPS officers at the Bureau. In addition, the Government of Japan implemented the first project for installing 2 main frame computers at the BPS in 1980 through JBIC.

Technical Cooperation to 1990 Population Census
     Secondly, in 1990, the Bureau dispatched two officers to the BPS as a statistical adviser for 1990 Population Census through JICA. In addition, the Government of Japan implemented the second project for upgrading 2 main frame computers at the BPS in 1987 through JBIC.

Technical Cooperation to 1996 Economic Census
     Thirdly, in 1992, the Bureau dispatched one officer to the BPS as a statistical adviser for 1996 Economic Census and until 1997 dispatched two officers in total for 1996 Economic Census as a long stay through JICA. And the Bureau conducted also trainings for the BPS officers at the Bureau. In addition, the Government of Japan implemented the third project for replacing 2 main frame computers with around 2000 micro computers at the BPS in 1997 through JBIC.

Technical Cooperation to 2000 Population Census
     Fourthly, in 1997, the Bureau dispatched one officer to the BPS as a statistical adviser for 2000 Population Census and until 2004 dispatched four officers in total for 2000 Population Census as a long stay through JICA. And the Bureau conducted also trainings for many BPS officers at both the Bureau and the BPS. In addition, the Government of Japan implemented the fourth project for installing 79 Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems at the BPS in 2000 through JICA.

Technical Cooperation to 2004 Population Survey
     Fifthly, in 2004, the Government of Japan implemented the fifth project for upgrading 300 micro computers at the BPS in 2004 through JICA. And one of the above mentioned officers dispatched by the Bureau for 2000 Population Census cooperated to also the fifth project.

     Thus the Bureau has played the primary role of the above mentioned Projects for more than 25 years and contributed greatly to the statistical capacity building of the BPS and the improvement of Population Census, Economic Census, and Population Survey in Indonesia.
