III. Major Durable Goods Ownership by Region
(1) IT and communications-related consumer durables
Seen by prefecture, Kanagawa Prefecture had the highest personal computer ownership quantities with 1,203 (77.4% ownership rates), followed by Tokyo, Fukui, Shiga, Aichi and Chiba, with ownership quantities high in the Kanto and Kinki regions. On the other hand, Okinawa Prefecture was the lowest at 525 (43.4%), followed by Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Kochi, Kumamoto and Aomori, with ownership quantities low in the Kyushu and Tohoku regions. (Figure III-1)
The figure of Kanagawa Prefecture, with the highest ownership quantities of the personal computers, was 2.3 times the number in Okinawa Prefecture, which had the lowest ownership quantities, but this had decreased compared to 1999, when it was 2.6 times (641 for Kanagawa to 243 for Okinawa).

Fukui Prefecture had the highest cellular phone ownership quantities with 2,061 (86.9% ownership rates), followed by Shiga, Nara, Tochigi, Ibaraki and Aichi. On the other hand, Iwate had the lowest ownership quantities with 1,510 (77.5%), followed by Hokkaido, Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Okinawa and Yamaguchi.
The number owned in Fukui Prefecture, with the highest ownership quantities of the cellular phones, was 1.4 times the number in Iwate Prefecture, which had the lowest ownership quantities, but this was smaller compared to that of personal computers which was 2.3 times. (Figure III-2)
Kanagawa Prefecture had the highest cellular phone ownership quantities per 1,000 people, divided by the number of people per household, at 606.7, followed by Tokyo, Nara, Saitama, Tochigi and Shiga, with ownership high in the Kanto and Kinki regions.

(2) Household durables
Seen by prefecture, Nara Prefecture had the highest dishwasher ownership quantities at 301 (30.0% ownership rates), followed by Ehime, Hiroshima, Wakayama, Yamaguchi, and Kagawa, with ownership quantities high in the Kinki, Chugoku, and Shikoku regions. Iwate Prefecture had the lowest ownership quantities, on the other hand, with 77 (7.4%), followed by Aomori, Fukushima, Okinawa, Yamagata, and Akita, with ownership quantities low in the Tohoku region. Tokushima Prefecture had the highest room air-conditioner ownership quantities with 3,287 (95.4% ownership rates), followed by Mie, Kagawa, Fukui, Wakayama and Kyoto, with ownership quantities high in the Kinki and Shikoku regions. On the other hand, Hokkaido had the lowest with 187 (15.1%), followed by Aomori, Iwate, Nagano, Miyagi and Fukushima, with ownership quantities low in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region. (Figure III-4)

(3) Cars
Fukui Prefecture had the highest car ownership quantities with 2,119 (95.2% ownership rates), followed by Gunma, Yamagata, Ibaraki, Nagano and Toyama, with ownership quantities high in the Hokuriku and Kanto regions. On the other hand, Tokyo was the lowest with 743 (63.9%), followed by Osaka?s 912 (73.4%) and Kanagawa?s 999 (78.6%), with these three prefectures at less than 1,000 cars. These were followed by Kyoto, Hyogo, and Saitama. (Figure III-5)
