2002 National Survey of Prices: Summary of Results (Small-scale outlet)

4 Difference of prices by supplier

  • General retail outlets usually make a purchase of commodities from a wholesaler, while convenience stores tend to do this from their head offices of corporations.
  • At general retail outlets, prices for cabbage, women?s blouse and canvas shoes differ depending on suppliers.

(1) For ?general retail outlet? and ?convenience store? which are the typical types of outlet among small-scale outlets, suppliers of main 20 commodities (56 items) are classified into the categories of ?from maker, producer or farm directly?, ?from wholesaler? and ?from head office of corporation?, and these ratios are studied.

For ?general retail outlet?, when looking at ?lipsticks?, the ratio of purchasing this product from ?maker, producer or farm directly? is high. Instead, for ?TV?, ?tofu?, ?health drinks? ?bicycles? and ?women?s blouse?, the ratios of purchasing from both ?maker, producer or farm directly? and ?wholesaler? are almost the same, and for the other items, the ratios from ?wholesaler? are high. (Chart 4.1)

Looking at ?convenience store?, in general the ratio of ?purchase from head office of corporation? is high, but for one item of ?non-glutinous rice? and ?edible oil?, the ratio of ?purchase from head office of corporation? to that of ?purchase from wholesaler? is almost the same. (Chart 4.2)

(2) For ?general retail outlet? and ?convenience store?, when looking at the items over 5% lower-priced and over 5% higher-priced than the average prices by type of supplier, the result is as shown in Table 4.1.

For ?general retail outlet?, in the category of ?purchase from maker, producer or farm directly?, ?tuna? and ?cabbage? are low-priced, on the other hand ?facial tissue?, ?women?s blouse?, ?canvas shoes? and ?panty hose? are high-priced. In the group of ?purchase from wholesaler?, ?women?s blouse? is low-priced. For ?purchase from head office of corporation?, ?retort-packed curry? and ?canvas shoes? are low-priced and ?cabbage? is high-priced.

In addition, looking at ?convenience store?, except ?tofu? that is high-priced in the category of ?purchase from maker, producer or farm directly?, there is no difference of price according to type of supplier.
