2002 National Survey of Prices: Summary of Results (Small-scale outlet)

2 Difference of prices between cases with or without discount sales

2.1 Ratio of outlets which conduct discount sales to those which do not

  • The ratio of small-scale outlets which conduct discount sales is lower than that of large-scale outlets. For general retail outlets, such ratio differs greatly from that of large-scale outlets, but at supermarkets it is close to that of large-scale outlets.

(1) Looking at the ratio of outlets which conduct ?discount sales? as a major management strategy in the categories of ?general retail outlet?, ?supermarket?, ?volume sales specialty store? and ?drug store? among small-scale outlets, the national average ratio is 14.2%. This ratio is considerably low compared to that of large-scale outlets (41.4%), but it increased by about 5 points compared to the result (9.5%) of the previous survey (1997).

Looking at the ratio by prefecture, Osaka-fu has the highest ratio (19.6%) followed by Tokyo-to (19.2%), Kanagawa-ken (18.7%) and Okinawa-ken (18.1%), and the ratios increased in almost all prefectures compared to the results of the previous survey. (Chart 2.1.1)

(2) Compared to the ratio of large-scale outlets by type of outlet, the ratio of small-scale outlets is generally lower than that of large-scale outlets. At ?general retail outlet?, the differences between them are large, but at ?supermarket?, the ratios are almost the same. (Chart 2.1.2)

2.2 Difference of prices between cases with or without discount sales

  • At supermarkets, food stuffs are low-priced by discount sales, while at volume sales specialty stores, clothing items, home electric appliances and other items are low-priced; therefore low-priced items by discount sales differ depending on the type of outlet.

Concerning the common 100 items, compared to the average prices between outlets which conduct discount sales and outlets which do not, the result is as shown in Table 2.2.1.

At ?general retail outlet?, there are many low-priced items.

At ?supermarket?, mainly food stuffs tend to be sold at low prices.

At ?volume sales specialty store?, there are low-priced clothing items and home electric appliances.

At ?drug store?, there is a little difference of prices by discount sales.
