2002 National Survey of Prices: Summary of Results (Bargain prices)

5 Price levels of normal prices and bargain prices by prefecture

  • Both normal prices and bargain prices of fresh milk in eastern Japan tend to be lower than those in western Japan.
  • The difference of normal prices of edible oil among different prefectures is large; however the difference of bargain prices is small.

Concerning ?large-scale supermarket? which has the highest bargaining rates, Table 5-1 shows the normal prices and the bargain prices of each of the top 5 high bargain items (?fresh milk?, ?sugar?, ?edible oil?, ?hen eggs? and ?facial tissue?) by prefecture.

Chart 5-1 and Chart 5-2 are graphs of ?fresh milk? and ?edible oil?.

(1) For ?fresh milk?, both normal prices and bargain prices in eastern Japan tend to be lower than those in western Japan.

In addition, in the prefectures where normal prices are high (low), bargain prices tend to be also high (low). The graph forms of both prices are similar, and both prices fluctuate in parallel.

(2) As for ?edible oil?, the normal price is 441.6 yen in Wakayama-ken, which is the highest in the country, while 289.8 yen in Okinawa-ken, which is the lowest. As for the bargain price of ?edible oil?, it is 237.0 yen in Niigata-ken, which is the highest, while 189.0 yen in Okinawa-ken, which is the lowest, therefore the difference of bargain prices by prefecture is smaller than that of normal prices by prefecture.
