2002 National Survey of Prices: Summary of Results (Bargain prices)

4 Change of prices during the week

  • At large-scale supermarkets, many items tend to become low-priced on Sunday and high-priced on Monday. In addition, the range of change of prices for items such as hen eggs, yoghurt, etc. is wide.
  • At small-scale general retail outlets, many items tend to become low-priced on Saturday, followed by Sunday, and high-priced on Sunday and Monday.

Table 4-1 and Table 4-2 show the prices applied from Friday to Thursday assuming an average price of a week as 100, at ?large-scale supermarket? for which the bargaining rate is high and ?small-scale general retail outlet? for which the bargaining rate is low.

(1) At ?large-scale supermarket?, many items tend to become the lowest-priced on Sunday (14 items among 18 items show their minimum (floor) values), and the highest-priced on Monday (11 items among 18 items show their maximum (ceiling) values).

Taking a look at the change of prices during the week by item with use of differences of points between minimum (floor) values and maximum (ceiling) values, ?hen eggs? is the biggest at 5.7 points, followed by ?yoghurt? at 3.8 points, ?edible oil? at 3.5 points and ?beef? at 3.1 points, etc.

(2) At ?small-scale general retail outlet?, many items become the lowest-priced on Saturday (9 items among 18 items show their minimum (floor) values), followed by Sunday (7 items among the same 18 items show their minimum (floor) values). In addition, many items become the highest-priced on Sunday and Monday (8 items among 18 items show their maximum (ceiling) values on both days). Compared to ?large-scale supermarket?, the range of change of prices is narrow and it differs in that many low-priced items are found on Saturday and many high-priced items on Sunday.

Taking a look at the change of prices during the week by item with use of differences of points between minimum (floor) values and maximum (ceiling) values, the item ?beef? which is the biggest value shows 2.4 points.
