2002 National Survey of Prices: Summary of Results (Large-scale outlet)

4 Difference of prices by ratio of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers)

4.1 Number of outlets by ratio of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers)

  • Outlets for which the ratio of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers) is 70% or more account for about 30% of all outlets, and outlets for which the ratio of such workers is 50% or more account for about 60%.
  • The ratio of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers) is high at supermarkets, volume sales specialty stores, drug stores and cooperative stores, while it is low at general retail outlets and department stores.

(1) Based on all surveyed outlets (all large-scale outlets), looking at the rate of surveyed outlets by ratio of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers), ?70% or more? accounts for 30.1%, and ?50% or more? accounts for 58.0%.

(*---Ratio of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers) in number of employees. The number of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers) was calculated by adding up the working hours of part-time workers and "arubaito" on the date of the survey, and converted at the rate of 8 hours per person.)

4-2 Difference of prices by ratio of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers)

  • As far as food stuffs and clothing items, etc. are concerned, there is a tendency that prices become lower as the ratio of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers) becomes higher.
  • Especially low-priced items, mainly clothing items, are found at outlets for which the ratio of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers) is high, compared to outlets which have a low ratio of such workers.

(1) Although the tendency in the difference of prices by ratio of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers) depends on items, as far as items such as food stuffs or clothing are concerned, there is a tendency that prices become lower as the said ratio becomes higher.

(2) Compared to prices applied by outlets for which the ratio of part-time workers and "arubaito" (temporary workers) is ?70% or more? and those for which the ratio is ?less than 10%?, at the former outlets, over 20% lower-priced items such as clothing items are found. In addition, there are also some food stuffs which are over 10% lower-priced.

Table 4.2 Over 10% lower-priced items found at outlets for which the ratio of part-time workers and arubaito (temporary workers) is 70% or more in comparison with outlets for which the ratio is ess than 10
