2. Number of Establishments and Persons Engaged by Service Industry

Number of Establishments by Service Industry

The 3 largest industries make up 50% of the whole service industry

  With regard to the breakdown of the number of establishments (2,126 thousands) by classification medium industry, the highest figure is 420 thousand (19.7% of the whole service industry), held by "General Eating and Drinking Places", followed by 398 thousand (18.7% of the whole service industry) held by "Laundry, beauty and bath services", and 254 thousand (12.0% of the whole service industry) held by "Real estate lessors and managers". The 3 largest industries make up 50.4% of the whole service industry.
  Compared to the composition ratio of 1999, "Social insurance and social welfare" rose 0.9 points. In contrast, "General eating and drinking places" decreased 0.9 points etc.

*As for 1999, results of "Recombined tabulation in New Industrial Classification" of "Establishment and Enterprise Census" were used, and new categories in the survey were "General eating and drinking places" and "Real estate". In addition, Medium Industry was divided into more specific units by the revision of the Standard Industrial Classification for Japan. Therefore, "Service industry" does not accord with the total in classification medium industry. 

  With regard to the breakdown of the number of establishments by Classification minor industry, "Eating places" accounts for 235 thousand (11.0% of the whole service industry). "Hair-dressing and beauty salon" makes up 173 thousand (8.1% of the whole service industry), while there were 150 thousand "House and room lessors" (7.1% of the whole service industry).
  Compared to the composition ratio of 1999, "Other health practitioners" such as massage businesses jumped 0.4 points, "Hair-dressing and beauty salon" increased 0.3 points, and "Business services, n.e.c", such as worker dispatching services, rose 0.3 points. In contrast, "Coffee shops" decreased 0.5 points, "Laundries" decreased 0.4 points, while "Sushi bars" decreased 0.4 points.

  The minor industry groups whose composition ratios of 2004 are more than 1.0%.

Increase and Rate of Increase of Establishments

Increase in establishments of "Social insurance and social welfare" spurred by an aged society

  Comparing the establishments in Classification medium industry with those of 1999, "Social insurance and social welfare" increased 19 thousand (a 49.7% increase), while "Medical and other health services"* increased 9 thousand (a 14.6% increase). 
  In contrast, "General eating and drinking places" decreased 24 thousand (a 5.3% decrease), and "Accommodations" decreased 14 thousand (a 17.9% decrease).

The establishments relating to senior citizen welfare have increased drastically

  With regard to "Social insurance and social welfare" by Classification minor industry, which has increased the most of all the establishments, "Welfare services for the aged and care services, except home care help services" such as Special nursing home for the elderly increased 8 thousand (an 81.5% increase), while "Miscellaneous social insurance, social welfare and care services" such as home care help service increased 7 thousand (a 157.2% increase), meaning the establishments relating to senior citizen welfare have increased drastically.

The establishments of "Maternity clinics and Nursing" increased about 70%

  With regard to "Medical and other health services" by Classification minor industry which had the second highest increase of the establishments, "Other health practitioners" such as massage business increased 7 thousand (an 11.2% increase).
  In addition, the rate of increase in "Maternity clinics and Nursing", such as visiting care station (which had a 65.7% increase), was about 70%.

The number of establishments in "Business services, n.e.c", such as worker dispatching services, has increased

  With regard to "Miscellaneous business services" by Classification minor industry, which had the third biggest increase of all establishments, "Business services, n.e.c" such as worker dispatching services increased 6 thousand (a 20.7% increase), and "Building maintenance services" increased 2 thousand (a 13.2% increase).

Number of Persons Engaged in Service Industry

The 4 largest industries hold about 50% of the whole service industry share

  In a breakdown of the number of persons engaged (14,769 thousand) in Classification medium industry, the highest figure is 2,777 thousand (18.8% of the whole service industry), held by "General eating and drinking places", followed by 2,251 thousand (15.2% of the whole service industry) for "Miscellaneous business services", such as building maintenance services and worker dispatching services. At 1,399 thousand "Social insurance and social welfare" holds 9.5% of the whole service industry share, while the 4th highest is "Laundry, beauty and bath services", with 1,216 thousands (8.2% of the whole service industry). Therefore, the 4 largest industries hold 51.7% of the whole service industry share.
  In addition, comparing these figures to the composition ratios of 1999, "Social insurance and social welfare" increased 3.9 points, "Miscellaneous business services" rose 3.1 points, while, "Accommodations" decreased 2.0 points, and "General eating and drinking places" decreased 1.6 points.

  In the breakdown of the number of persons engaged by Classification minor industry, "Eating places" accounts for 1,777 thousand (12.0% of the whole service industry), "Business services, n.e.c" such as worker dispatching services engages 1,102 thousand (7.5% of the whole service industry), meaning the figures for these two industries surpass a million. "Building maintenance services" accounts for 732 thousand (5.0% of the whole service industry).
  Compared to the composition ratio of 1999, "Business services, n.e.c" rose 3.2 points, "Welfare services for the aged and care services, except home care help services" such as Special nursing home for the elderly, increased 1.8 points, and "Miscellaneous social insurance, social welfare and care services" such as home care help service went up 1.6 points. In contrast, "Hotels" decreased 1.7 points, "Laundries" and "Engineering and architectural services" such as architectural design services both dropped 1.0 points.

Increase and Rate of Increase of Persons Engaged

The number of persons engaged in "Social insurance and social welfare" increased about 640 thousand

  Compared with the number of persons engaged in Classification medium industry in 1999, those in "Social insurance and social welfare" increased 638 thousand (an 83.8% increase), and "Miscellaneous business services" such as building maintenance services and worker dispatching services increased 615 thousand (a 37.6% increase).
  In contrast, "Accommodations" decreased 206 thousand (a 21.1% decrease), and "Services for amusement and hobbies" decreased 93 thousand (a 9.8% decrease).

The number of persons engaged in senior citizen welfare has increased drastically

  With regard to "Social insurance and social welfare" by Classification minor industry, the category with the highest increase in persons engaged was "Welfare services for the aged and care services, except home care help services" such as special nursing home for the elderly, which increased 300 thousand (a 94.7% increase), followed by "Miscellaneous social insurance, social welfare and care services" such as home care help services, which increased 247 thousand (a 307.9% increase). In summary, the number of persons engaged in senior citizen welfare increased drastically.

The number of persons engaged in "Worker dispatching services" has jumped by 419 thousand

  While "Miscellaneous business services" by Classification minor industry had the second highest increase in persons engaged, the highest increase of all was in "Business services, n.e.c" such as worker dispatching services, which jumped 527 thousand (a 91.8% increase). Within "Business services, n.e.c", "worker dispatching services" rose by 419 thousand (a 209.4% increase). "Building maintenance services" increased 66 thousand (a 9.9% increase), while "Guard services" increased 13 thousand (a 4.2% increase).
  In contrast, "Private employment services" decreased 17 thousand (a 36.0% decrease), "Stenographic, entree document and copy services" decreased 10 thousand (a 30.2% decrease), and "Commodity inspection services" decreased 8 thousand (a 21.2 decrease).
