Summay of the Result of the 1999 Survey

I Result of nationwide

1 The number of institutes and employees in service sector

The number of institutes has been increased 12.2% in decade, while the increase of latest 5 years has been slow downed
As of July 1, 1999, the quantity of institutes of service sector are 14,900 thousands (except for some of homemaking service, hospital, school. Refer to "Outline of survey". Hereinafter mentioned as same.), it has been increased by 12.2% compared to first survey of 1989. In view of commercial business industry which is comparable that of 1994, decennial rate of increase is 11.5%. However increasing rate from 1994 to 1999 is 2.1 %, which is lower than that of 9.3% from 1989 to 1994. Payroll is increased by 37.9% in decade.

The number of employees increased by 37.9% over the decade
As of July 1, 1999, the payroll is 11,717 thousands, it has been increased by 37.9% compared to that of 1989. In view of the payroll of 1999 for each employee position, "Single proprietorship and Unpaid family worker" is 916 thousands (7.8% of all payroll) and "Paid official" is 866 thousands (7.4% of all payroll), "Regular employee" is 9,449 thousands (80.6% of all payroll), "Temporary worker" is 486 thousands (4.1% of all payroll).

2 The number of institutes for each industry

"Cleaning, Hair dresser, Public bathhouse" which are accounted for 27.2% of quantity of institutes.

In view of the quantity of institutes by middle industry divisions, the quantity of 'Cleaning, Hair dresser, Public bathhouse " is most, 408 thousand(27.2% of all institutes)and then "Specialize service" such as Civil engineering and construction service and Individual instruction institute is 315 thousands(21.0% of all institutes), "Religious institute" is 95 thousands (6.3% of institutes).
In view of the quantity of institutes by minor industry divisions, "Beauty industry" is most, 173 thousands and then "Individual instruction institute" is 139 thousands and "Hair dresser" is 125 thousands.

Lesson is becoming active, though kinds of it has been changed

 Among the "Special service business" which is most increased of institutes in decade(increased 61 thousands), in terms of "Individual instruction institute", "Prep school" which had been increased drastically from 1989 to 1994 had declined from 1994 to 1999. In turn, "Individual music class" and "Other individual instruction institute" such as English class had increased. Meanwhile, "Individual instruction institute of Japanese flora art and tea ceremony" and "Individual abacus school" had declined from 1994 to 1999, it shows the kinds of lesson has been changed in recent.

Companies tend to use outsourcing

In view of "Other service business and other service business" which is second increasing quantity of institute in decade (increased 20 thousands), the increasing was 6 thousands from 1989 to 1994, while it had increased drastically by 14thousands by sharp increase of "Industrial service business which does not classified as others" such as "Manpower supply service" and "Building service business", "Private job-search service" and "Security business" from 1994 to 1999, it describes the true state of trend of outsourcing.

"Therapy" and "Aged people's welfare business" which had increased along with aging society
In view of the breakdown of "Medical care" and "Social assurance, social welfare" by minor industry divisions which had increased their institutions in decade, "Therapy" is 71.0% of the total 15 thousands of the increasing institutes of "medical service", and "aged people's welfare business" is 43.4% of the total 12 thousands of the increasing institutes of "Social assurance, Social welfare". It shows the increase of service industry to accommodate aging society.

3 Amount of total receipts

Amount of total receipts of service industry is 201,715.2 billion yen, the percentage of "Amusement service" is 19.1%

Amount of total receipts of whole service industry is 201,715.2 billion yen, and in view of the breakdown of it by middle industry divisions, "Amusement service" is 38,480.7 billion yen (19.1% of whole service industry), "Social assurance, social welfare" is 21,359.7 billion yen (10.6% of whole service industry), "Special service business" is 19,440.7 billion yen (9.6% of whole service industry).

Most amounts of total receipts per employee is "Advertising business"
Amount of total receipts per employee of service industry is 17220 thousands yen. In view of it by middle industrial divisions, most amount of total receipts per employee is 66,390 thousands of "Advertising business", secondly 51,650 thousands of "Rental service", 47,980 thousands of "broadcasting service". Meanwhile, less amount of total receipts per employee is "Cleaning, Hair dresser, Public bathhouse" (5,910 thousands yen), "Medical service" (6,740 thousands yen) etc.
Compared the amount of total receipts per employee that of 1989, "Academic institution" and "Cooperative association" have dropped each by 29.2% and 27.3%. All other 22 industries have increased, except for these 2 industries.

Proportion of income from subordinated industry is less than tenth

As for the whole service industry, although the percentage of incoming amount of subordinated industry (minor industry division base) is 9.9%, in that, the part which belongs to "wholesale and retail trade, restaurant" and "service industry" comprises a large percentage.
As for the "Hotel, other lodgings", total 73.5% of subordinated industry is "wholesale and retail trade, restaurant", "Rental service", total 31.8% is "wholesale and retail trade, restaurant" and "information service and research service", total 75.4% is "service industry".

Commercial industry which has a large percentage of income from public office are "Waste disposal service" and "Specialized service business"
As for the incoming amount of main industry of service business, in view of the customers, The income from individual (end user) is 41.5%, from companies and organizations is 46.6%, from public office is 11.9%.
In view of the industries which had higher income from public office, 50.8% of income of "Other service business" was gained from public office, 44.4% of income of "Social assurance, social welfare" was gained from public office and 31.9% of income of "Health care and hygiene" was gained from public office. It shows that as for the non-profitable organizations, they gained higher income from public office than others. As for the commercial companies, "Waste disposal service" (24.0%) and "Special service business" (22.9%) was gained much income from pubic office.

4 Annual salary for each employee

Information industry, pay level is high
In view of total amount of annual salary per employee by middle industrial divisions, 8,440 thousands of "Broadcasting service" is highest, secondly 6,840 thousands yen of "Academic organization", "Advertising business" is 6,280 thousands yen, "Information service and research service" is 6,160 thousands yen, "Machine and furniture repair service" is 5,790 thousands yen. Pay level of information-related industry is high. Meanwhile, the industry of lowest total amount of salary per employee is "Religious institution" of 2,210 thousands yen, secondly "Car parking service" of 2,540 thousands yen, "Cleaning, Hair dresser, Public bathhouse" of 2,710 thousands yen, "Amusement service" of 3,100 thousands yen.
From 1989 to 1999, the industry which has the highest rate of increasing of total amount of annual salary per employee is "Other service business" of 91.2%, secondly "Information service and research service" (75.3%), "Religious institute" (66.3%).

II Result in prefecture governments

More than tenth of the institute of service industry is placed in Tokyo
In view of quantity of institutes of service industry by prefecture governments, Tokyo has 170 thousands of institutes, accounts for 11.3% in country, secondly Osaka has 107 thousands of institutes, Aichi prefecture has 79 thousands of institutes. In view of quantity of institutes of service industry by prefecture governments by middle industrial divisions, Tokyo has most, 19 middle divisions in 24 middle divisions. In prefecture governments except for Tokyo, the industry which has most institutes are "Car park service" "Religious institute" (both are Osaka prefecture), 'Hotel, other loadings" (Nagano prefecture), "Cooperative association" (Hokkaido prefecture), "Waste disposal service" (Saitama prefecture).

- Distribution of Hair dresser

There are many institutes in big cities like Tokyo, Osaka, while the number of institutes per thousands of population, Tohoku area, Akita, Yamagata have many institutes.

- Distribution of Hotel

There are many institutes in Nagano, Shizuoka, which have tourist resorts, and Tokyo was ranked 5, has many business hotels.

- Distribution of Waste disposal service

There are many institutes in big cities. As for the metropolitan area, Saitama and Kanagawa have more institutes than Tokyo.

- Distribution of Day-care center and Aged welfare service

Hokkaido has many institutes of Day-care center and Aged welfare service. In addition, there are many institutes of Day-care center in big cities in some prefectures and Kyushi area
