The Japan Statistical Yearbook is a comprehensive and systematic compendium of the basic statistical information of Japan, covering wide-ranging fields such as land, population, economy, society and culture. The origin of the Yearbook goes back to the Shimbi Statistical Tables published in 1872, four years after the Meiji Restoration of 1868. The first Statistical Yearbook of Japan was published in 1882, and since then it had continually been published with renewed data every year to reach the 59th issue before it was suspended due to World War II. After the war, the yearbook was revived as the Japan Statistical Yearbook in 1949, and has been published annually.
