Economic Census for Business Activity (See "7 Business Activities") Current Survey of Production of METI (Fundamental Statistical Survey) The survey has been conducted monthly by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry since 1948 with the aims of clarifying current productive activities in the mining and manufacturing industries and obtaining basic data for measures concerning those industries. The survey covers producers of the minerals and industrial products listed in the Annex to the Regulations on the Current Survey of Production of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. It surveys establishments that fall within the scope of the production items listed in each category. In addition, establishments that manage the sales of the production items of the above-mentioned establishments or establishments that outsource the production of production items to the above-mentioned establishments and fall within the scope of the production items listed in each category of the Annex (specified establishments) are also surveyed. Census of Manufacture (Fundamental Statistical Survey) This census was conducted to clarify the actual conditions of the nation's manufacturing industry, to obtain basic data for administrative measures by the national and prefectural governments and other local public entities, such as industrial policy and small and medium-sized enterprise policy, and to produce economic structure statistics in the interim years of the Economic Census for Business Activity. The census was conducted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry once every five years since 1909 as the Survey of Factories, and then annually since 1920. The name was changed to the present one in 1951. Since 2019, the survey has been conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The census covers establishments falling under "Division E - Manufacturing Industry" listed in the Japan Standard Industrial Classification (excluding those belonging to the government and establishments with three or less employees). Starting in 2017, the census was conducted as of 1 June every year, except in years when the Economic Census for Business Activity was conducted. However, since 2022, it has been included in the Annual Business Survey and conducted as the Survey of Manufacturing Establishments.
