7 Labour Force Status of Foreigners

The number of employed foreigners increased 13.5 percent.

- The number of employed foreigners aged 15 and over is 684,916, or 1.09 percent of total employed persons. The number of employed foreigners increased by 81,357, an increase of 13.5 percent from 1995.

- A breakdown of the number of employed foreigners by Industry (major groups) showed the highest number in "Manufacturing" at 247,668, followed by the "Wholesale and retail trade, and eating and drinking places" at 154,904, and "Services" at 150,046. These three industries account for approximately 80 percent of employed foreigners. A comparison of these three industries with 1995 shows an increase of 46,598 (23.2 percent) in "Manufacturing", 14,950 (10.7 percent) in "Wholesale and retail trade, and eating and drinking places" and 17,815 (13.5percent) in "Services", respectively.

- A breakdown of the ratio of employed foreigners to employed persons by prefecture shows that Osaka-fu had the highest ratio at 1.94 percent, followed by Nagano-ken at 1.81 percent and Aichi-ken at 1.70 percent. High ratios are seen in the regions from Kanto to Kinki.
