10. Residential circumstances

Home ownership rate is 61.1%.

- There are 27,905,128 households (61.1% of the total) in which the residence is owned by the occupiers and 12,297,660 households (26.9% of the total) that live in rented accommodation.

- The average gross floor area of all residences is 91.3 m2. The average floor area of privately rented accommodation, 42.3 m2, is one third the 120.5 m2 size of owner-occupied residences.

- Locally, the highest proportion of households in owner-occupied residences is 79.3% in Toyama Prefecture and the lowest proportion is 43.7% in Metropolitan Tokyo. By contrast the highest proportion of households in privately rented accommodation is 40.3% in Metropolitan Tokyo and the lowest proportion is 13.2% in Toyama Prefecture.

Moreover, at 146.4 m2, Toyama Prefecture has the largest average gross floor area of dwellings and, at 63.0m2, Metropolitan Tokyo has the smallest.
