Outline of Annual Business Survey
Purpose of the Survey
The Annual Business Survey was established in 2019 as the new Fundamental Statistical Survey through the integration and reorganization of the existing statistical surveys. The survey is conducted every year* in order to identify the structure of all industries, such as their added value, and contribute to improving the precision of the National Accounts Statistics, and to grasp the actual situation in the interim year of the Economic Census for Business Activity implemented every five years.

Legal Basis of the Survey
This survey is conducted as the Fundamental Statistical Survey under the Statistical Act (Act No. 53 of 2007).
Coverage and Scale of the Survey
This survey covers all enterprises above a certain scale in all industries (Questionnaire for all industries), and establishments above another scale in manufacturing industry (Questionnaire for manufactures).
1.Questionnaire for all industries (approx. 270,000 enterprises)
- All enterprises excluding individual proprietorship enterprises within the scope of achieving an 80% sales share in the Section, Division, and Group of the industrial classification.
2.Questionnaire for manufactures (approx. 122,000 establishments)
- All establishments excluding central/local government and individual proprietorship establishments within the scope of achieving an 90% shipment value share in the Section, Division, Group and Class in manufacturing industry.
Survey Items
1.Questionnaire for all industries
Type of organization, amount of capital, sales and costs of the entire enterprise, details of the business activities and sales by business activities, etc.
*Ratio of costs by business segment, breakdown of cost (For more details, see Annex.) and sales of each affiliated establishment of enterprise are surveyed at some large-scale enterprises.
2.Questionnaire for manufactures
Number of persons employed, total cash wages and salaries, cost of raw materials, fuels and electricity consumed, and subcontracting expenses for consigned production, value of manufactured goods shipments, value of tangible fixed assets, etc.
Data of the Survey
The survey is conducted as of June 1 every year, excluding the year in which the Economic Census for Business Activity is implemented.
Method of the Survey
There are two types of surveys: "survey by online" and "survey by direct mailing".
Implementation of the Survey
The SBJ entrusts the implementation of the survey to private research institutes and the National Statistics Center.
