Results of the Survey of Research and Development

R&D Expenditure

Japan's total expenditure on R&D during fiscal year (FY) 2020 stood at 19.24 trillion yen, a 1.7 percent decrease from the previous fiscal year. It has decreased the first time in four years.

Expenditure on R&D as a percentage of GDP was 3.59 percent, a 0.08 percentage point increase from the previous fiscal year.

R&D Personnel

As of 31 March 2021, the total number of researchers is 890,500, a 1.1 percent increase from the previous year. It has increased for five consecutive years,the highest ever.

 

The R&D expenditures in FY2020 per researcher was ¥21.60 million, a 2.8% decrease from the previous fiscal year.

 

Chart 2 Trends in the number of researchers and R&D expenditures per researcher

The number of female researchers is 166,300 and accounts for 17.5 percent of the total researchers. This figure is the highest ever.
