DIDs

?Densely Inhabited District which is often referred to as DID and is defined as an area a city, town or village that is composed of a groups of contiguous basic unit blocks each of which has a population density of about 4,000 inhabitants or more per square kilometer, and whose total population exceeds 5,000 as of October 1, 2010.

Major Metropolitan Areas

?"Major Metropolitan Areas" are formed depending upon "The central cities" and "The surrounding areas".
?The criteria for establishing "The central cities" and "The surrounding areas" are as follows.

(1) Central cities

?The central cities are Ku-area of Tokyo-to and cities designated by the Cabinet Order.
?In case that two or more central cities are located closely each other, Major Metropolitan Areas are not established separately but combined together.

(2) Surrounding areas

?The surrounding areas satisfies the following conditions, that is, resident 15 years of age and over workers and students in the administrative unit area in question commuting to the central cities occupies 1.5 percent or more of its total resident population, and the administrative unit area is contiguous to the central cities.
?In case that the administrative unit area, where under 1.5 percent of the resident 15 years of age and over workers and students commute to the central cities, is entirely enclosed by the areas defined as surrounding areas, it is also regarded as a surrounding area.

(3) The major metropolitan areas are as follows:

  • Sapporo Major Metropolitan Area : Sapporo-shi
  • Sendai Major Metropolitan Area : Sendai-shi
  • Kanto Major Metropolitan Area : Saitama-shi,Chiba-shi,Ku-area of Tokyo-to,Yokohama-shi,Kawasaki-shi,Sagamihara-shi
  • Niigata Major Metropolitan Area : Niigata-shi
  • Shizuoka-Hamamatsu Major Metropolitan Area : Shizuoka-shi,Hamamatsu-shi
  • Chyukyo Major Metropolitan Area : Nagoya-shi
  • Kinki Major Metropolitan Area : Kyoto-shi,Osaka-shi,Sakai-shi,Kobe-shi
  • Okayama Major Metropolitan Area : Okayama-shi
  • Hiroshima Major Metropolitan Area : Hiroshima-shi
  • Kitakyushu-Fukuoka Major Metropolitan Area : Kitakyushu-shi,Fukuoka-shi
  • Kumamoto Major Metropolitan Area : Kumamoto-shi

Metropolitan Areas

?"Metropolitan Areas" are formed depending upon "The central cities" and "The surrounding areas".
?The criteria for establishing "The central cities" and "The surrounding areas" are as follows.

(1) Central cities

?The central cities are the cities with population of 500,000 and over which are not included in the major metropolitan areas.

(2) Surrounding areas

?The surrounding areas satisfies the following conditions, that is, resident 15 years of age and over workers and students in the administrative unit area in question commuting to the central cities occupies 1.5 percent or more of its total resident population, and the administrative unit area is contiguous to the central cities.
?In case that the administrative unit area, where under 1.5 percent of the resident 15 years of age and over workers and students commute to the central cities, is entirely enclosed by the areas defined as surrounding areas, it is also regarded as a surrounding area.

(3) The metropolitan areas are as follows:

  • Utsunomiya Metropolitan Area : Utsunomiya-shi
  • Matsuyama Metropolitan Area : Matsuyama-shi
  • Kagoshima Metropolitan Area : Kagoshima-shi

Range of Distance

?"Range of Distance" stated here refer to one of area classification and they cover the area of municipalities located in every 10 kilometers range of distance divided by concentric circles centered by each major city municipal office (*Tokyo-to, Nagoya-shi and Osaka-shi). As the radius of the largest concentric circle, 70 kilometers were used for Tokyo, 50 kilometers for Nagoya and Osaka respectively.
?Municipalities on the circumference of the concentric circles were in principle included into the range of distance in which areas of the municipalities occupied most wide.
?* In this survey, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is the former building in Chiyoda-ku.
