Explanation of Survey Items

Questionnaire A

1. Items related to household
The status of the householder (age, status of employment, marital status, etc.) and the status of the entire household (number of employed persons, number of persons attending school, etc.) are surveyed.
One of the objectives of this survey is to supplement the results of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey. As such, when this survey is examined together with the results of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey, it is necessary to survey items related to the householder.
Trends in household consumption are elucidated by combining the householder's age, employees of the entire company at which the householder works, annual income of the entire household, etc.

Household : Gathering of people who live together and support each other or a single member who lives alone.

Householder : A person who is the main income earner of his or her family rather than a householder in name only.

Household member : Householder and his or her family, and persons living together who support each other.
Family members who have been away from home for 3 months or more because of their studies or work
and those who are hospitalized on a long-term basis are not included.

Annual income of entire household (pretax income of the past year)
Since the status of household consumption varies substantially according to income, the survey examines what kind of disparity exists in the status of purchase of rarely-purchased expensive goods and services, the status of ownership and utilization of equipment and services related to Information and Communication Technology (ICT), monthly expenditure, etc. according to annual income of the entire household.

2. Status of utilization of electronic money
Regarding the "Status of utilization of electronic money", data are provided for understanding the utilization of electronic money on household. Moreover, data are provided for understanding the effects of reward services like "Frequent Flyer Program" money on household consumption.

3. Status of purchase of goods and services through the internet
Regarding the " Status of purchase of goods and services through the internet", data reveals the amount paid over one month for goods and services purchased through the internet and kind of devices used when purchasing.Data are devided into 3 categories("Household Head","Spouse of household head",and"Other members of household").

Questionnaire B

1. Items related to household (change from previous month)

2.Amount paid over one month for specific goods and services
This survey is conducted in response to the interim report at Council for Improvement of Method of Grasping Personal Consumption Trends The report pointed out that "it is crucially important to grasp large consumption which has a large error because of a low frequency of purchase with the aim of grasping overall consumption trends and improving the accuracy of quick estimates of quarterly national income , and it is vital to consider conducting a demand-side large sample survey that covers expensive goods in particular." As such, survey items primarily consisting of rarely-purchased expensive goods and services were selected.

Based on the results of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey, the criterion was set that expenditure per purchase amount to 30,000 yen or more. Based on this criterion, items which were purchased less than 1 time per year per household and which accounted for 0.01% or more of annual consumption expenditure were selected. Furthermore, items closely related to items selected according to the aforesaid criterion as well as items required for making quick estimates of quarterly national income were added.
Items not selected as described above which made a large contribution to error (excluding allowance, food and other oridinary items) were also added.
With regard to items, such as house and land rent, equipment repair and maintenance, tuition and supplementary education, subdivided items of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey are surveyed collectively. Survey items total 41 items.
