Summary of the 2008 Survey of Household Economy (Results Related to Information Technology (IT))

I Ownership and Utilization of Equipments and Services Related to Information Technology (IT)

1. Outline

a. Ownership of equipments which were able to use the Internet

  The proportion of households owning equipments which were able to use the Internet was 63.9% in 2008, up 1.8 points from the previous year. Among the equipments, Personal Computer was the highest proportion at 55.6%, (87.0% of the households owning equipments) followed by Cell Phone/PHS at 46.2% (72.3%). Compared with the previous year, Personal Computer was up 2.1 points and Cell Phone/PHS was up 0.3 points.

b. Means of communication used for the Internet most frequently

  Among the households, the proportion of those using the Internet with equipments owned by households was 49.6%, up 3.7 points from the previous year. Breaking down the use by means of communication which is used most frequently, Fiber-optics was the highest proportion at 19.4% (39.1% of the households using the Internet), followed by xDSL at 16.3% (32.9%), CATV lines at 7.8% (15.7%), and ISDN lines at 2.7% (5.4%).

c. Utilization of the Internet for purchasing goods and services

  In an analysis of the utilization of the Internet for purchasing goods and services (excluding downloads of sounds signaling incoming calls, etc.), the proportion of households which had ordered over the Internet on purchasing was 22.5%, up 0.2 points from the previous year. The proportion of households which had used the Internet auction was 5.5%, down 0.3 points from the previous year.

2. Analysis by Age Group of Household Head (Two-or-more-person households)

a. Ownership of equipments which were able to use the Internet

  In an analysis of households owning equipments which were able to use the Internet by age group of household head, the 40-49 (years-old) was the highest at 89.4%, followed by aged the 30-39 at 87.6% and the 50-59 at 81.2%. The 70 years old and over was the lowest at 42.3%.

  In the breakdown by type of equipment with the Internet use, the proportion of Personal Computer was the highest in every group of the 30 years old and over, while that of Cell Phone/PHS was the highest in the under 30.

b. Utilization of the Internet for purchasing goods and services

  In an analysis of households which had used the Internet within a month by age group of household head, the 40-49 was the highest proportion at 80.6%, followed by the 30-39 at 78.1% and the under 30 at 70.7%. The 70 years old and over was the lowest at 27.1%.

  In terms of the proportion of households which had ordered over the Internet on purchasing, the 30-39 was the highest at 41.3%, while the 70 years old and over was the lowest at 8.7%.

c. Total expenditure on goods and services ordered over the Internet

  In an analysis of total monthly expenditure on goods and services ordered over the Internet by age group of household head, the 30-39 was the highest expenditure at 6,271 yen, followed by the 40-49 at 5,876 yen and the under 30 at 5,272 yen. The 70 years old and over was the lowest at 976 yen.

3. Analysis by Occupation of Household Head (Two-or-more-person households)

a. Ownership of equipments which were able to use the Internet

  In terms of the proportion of households owning equipments which were able to use the Internet by occupation of household head, Employee was the highest at 81.8%, followed by Corporative administrators at 80.4% and Individual proprietors and others at 67.5%.

b. Utilization of the Internet for purchasing goods and services

  In terms of the proportion of households which had used the Internet within a month by occupation of household head, Employee was the highest at 70.5%, followed by Corporative administrators at 70.0% and Individual proprietors and others at 53.8%.

  In terms of the proportion of households which had ordered over the Internet on purchasing, Corporative administrators was the highest at 36.1%, followed by Employee at 32.5% and Individual proprietors and others at 23.7%.

c. Total expenditure on goods and services ordered over the Internet

  In an analysis of total monthly expenditure on goods and services ordered over the Internet by occupation of household head, Corporative administrators was the highest at 5,387 yen, followed by Employee at 4,720 yen and Individual proprietors and others at 2,696 yen.

4. Analysis by Yearly Income Group of Household (Two-or-more-person households)

a. Ownership of equipments which were able to use the Internet

  In terms of the proportion of households owning equipments which were able to use the Internet by yearly income group of household, it was found that the higher the income was, the ownership rate of such equipments tended to be higher.

b. Utilization of the Internet for purchasing goods and services

  In terms of the proportion of households which had used the Internet within a month by yearly income group of household, it was found that the higher the income was, the use rate tended to be higher. The proportion of the group of 15 million yen and over was 52.4%.

  It was found that the higher the income was, the higher the proportion of households which had ordered over the Internet on purchasing was.

c. Total expenditure on goods and services ordered over the Internet

  In an analysis of total monthly expenditure on goods and services ordered over the Internet by yearly income group of household, it was found that the higher the income was, the higher the total monthly expenditure on goods and services ordered over the Internet was. The total monthly expenditure of the group of 15 million yen and over was 11,318 yen.

II. Ownership and Utilization of Electronic Money

1.Outline

a. Ownership of Electronic Money

  The proportion of households which owned electronic money was 24.4%. In the breakdown by district, Kanto was the highest at 44.3%, followed by Kinki at 18.8% and Chugoku at 13.4%. By city group, Major cities was the highest at 34.4%.

b. Utilization of Electronic Money

  The proportion of households which used electronic money was 18.0%. In an analysis of the place where households most frequently used electronic money, Transportation was the highest at 12.5%, followed by Convenience store at 3.2%. In the breakdown by district, Transportation was the highest at 30.5% in Kanto.

2. Analysis by Age Group of Household Head (Two-or-more-person households)

a. Ownership of Electronic Money

  In an analysis of households which owned electronic money by age group of household head, the 30-39 (years-old) was the highest at 41.2%, followed by the 40-49 at 39.4% and the under 30 at 36.2%. The 70 years old and over was the lowest at 12.4%.

b. Utilization of Electronic Money

  In terms of the proportion of households which used electronic money by age group of household head, the 30-39 was the highest at 27.5%, while the 70 years old and over was the lowest at 10.1%.

  In an analysis of the place where households most frequently used electronic money by age group of the household head, Transportation was the highest proportion in each age group.

3. Analysis by Occupation of Household Head (Two-or-more-person households)

a. Ownership of Electronic Money

  In terms of the proportion of households which owned electronic money by occupation of household head, Employee was the highest at 34.5%, followed by Corporative administrators at 33.4%.

b. Utilization of Electronic Money

  In an analysis of average usage amount per household by occupation of household head, Corporative administrators was the highest at 11,139 yen, followed by Individual proprietors and others at 9,260 yen and Employee at 8,476 yen.

4. Analysis by Yearly Income Group of Household (Two-or-more-person households)

a. Ownership of Electronic Money

  In terms of the proportion of households which owned electronic money by yearly income group of household, it was found that the higher the income was, the ownership rate of such electronic money tended to be higher. The proportion of the group of 15million yen and over was 51.4%.

b. Utilization of Electronic Money

  In terms of the proportion of households which used electronic money by yearly income group of household, it was found that the higher the income was, the use rate tended to be higher.

  In an analysis of the place where households most frequently used electronic money by yearly income group of household, Transportation was the highest proportion in each yearly income group.

III. Ownership and Utilization of Reward Card etc.

1.Outline

a. Ownership of Reward Card etc.

  The proportion of households which owned reward card/mileage card was 63.7%. In the breakdown by district, Kanto was the highest at 71.1%, followed by Kinki at 65.9% and Hokkaido at 62.8%. By city group, Major cities was the highest at 69.6%. The proportion of households which had exchanged reward points was 18.6%.

b. Utilization of Reward Point etc.

  In an analysis of the goods and services that households exchanged with point, Food (beverage is contained) was the highest at 5.7%, followed by Gift certificate at 5.2% and Sundry goods at 3.3%.

2. Analysis by Age Group of Household Head (Two-or-more-person households)

a. Ownership of Reward Card etc.

  In an analysis of households which owned reward card/mileage card by age group of household head, the 40-49 (years-old) was the highest at 81.1%, followed by the 30-39 at 80.7%.

  In terms of the proportion of households which had exchanged reward points, the 40-49 was also the highest at 25.3%.

3. Analysis by Occupation of Household Head (Two-or-more-person households)

a. Ownership of Reward Card etc.

  In terms of the proportion of households which owned reward card/mileage card, by occupation of household head, Corporative administrators was the highest at 78.8%, followed by Employee at 77.1% and Individual proprietors and others at 64.6%.

b. Utilization of Reward Card etc.

  In an analysis of average exchanging amount per household by occupation of household head, Corporative administrators was the highest at 8,756 yen, followed by Employee at 5,934 yen, and Individual proprietors and others at 5,420 yen.

4. Analysis by Yearly Income Group of Household (Two-or-more-person households)

a. Ownership of Reward Card etc.

  In terms of the proportion of households which owned reward card/mileage card by yearly income group of household, it was found that the higher the income was, the higher the ownership rate of such reward cards was.

  It was found that the higher the income was, the higher the proportion of households which had exchanged reward points was.

b. Utilization of Reward Card etc.

  In an analysis of average exchanging amount per household by yearly income group of household, the group of 12.5-15 million yen was the highest at 16,605 yen, followed by the group of 15 million yen and over at 12,738 yen, and the group of 10-12.5 million yen at 8,375 yen.
