I-1 General Situation of Number of Establishments and Persons Engaged

The number of establishments decreased 5.5% and the number of persons engaged decreased 4.2% compared with the result of the 1996 Survey.

The total number of establishments in Japan stood at 6,491,471 as of October 1, 2001.In the case of establishments, whose type and so on of business were unknown are omitted,the revised number of establishments was 6,350,101 and the number of persons engaged was 60,158,044

Note: We took establishments whose type and so on of business were unknown as objects of total from the 2001 Census. We omitted such establishments in the following descriptions.

The number of establishments decreased 5.5% (1.1% per annum), and the number of persons engaged decreased 4.2% (0.8 per annum), compared with the result of 1996 survey.

The number of male persons engaged was 34,882, 434, and that of female persons engaged was 25,275,610.The number of male persons engaged decreased 5.8% and the number of female persons engaged decreased 1.8% compared with the result of 1996 survey. The percentage of female persons engaged continued to grow.
