The number of inter-prefectural migrants was 2,568,086, the rate of migration was up from the previous year

  • The number of All nationalities internal migrants was 5,403,465 and the rate of migration was 4.28%, up 0.04 points from the previous year.
  • The number of All nationalities inter- prefectural migrants was 2,568,086 and the rate of migration was 2.04%, up 0.03 points from the previous year.
  • The number of All nationalities intra- prefectural migrants was 2,835,379 and the rate of migration was 2.25%, up 0.02 points from the previous year.

The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo was 82,982

  • Regarding the net-migration for prefectures, eight prefectures had positive net-migration in 2019: Tokyo-to (82,982 persons), Kanagawa-ken (29,609 persons), Saitama-ken (26,654 persons), and so on. The net-migration in Okinawa-ken (695 persons) changed from negative to positive. The rate of positive net-migration in Tokyo-to (0.60%) was the highest, followed by Saitama-ken (0.36%), Kanagawa-ken (0.32%), and so on. The rate of positive net-migration in Chiba-ken was down from the previous year.
  • On the other hand, thirty-nine prefectures had negative net-migration in 2019: Hiroshima-ken (8,018 persons), Ibaraki-ken (7,495 persons), Nagasaki-ken (7,309 persons), and so on. Compared with the previous year, the number of negative net-migration in Hiroshima-ken increased by 1,961 persons. The rate of negative net-migration in Nagasaki-ken (0.55%) was the highest, followed by Aomori-ken (0.48%), Tokushima-ken (0.46%), and so on.

The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo Area was 148,783, increased by 8,915 persons from the previous year

  • The net-migration for all three major metropolitan areas (Tokyo Area, Nagoya Area and Osaka Area) had a positive net-migration of 129,669 persons, increased by 6,615 persons from the previous year.
  • The Tokyo Area had a positive net-migration of 148,783 persons, increased by 8,915 persons from the previous year. The rate of positive net-migration was 0.41%, up 0.03 points from the previous year.
  • The Nagoya Area had a negative net-migration of 15,017 persons. The rate of negative net-migration was 0.13%, up 0.06 points from the previous year.
  • The Osaka Area had a negative net-migration of 4,097 persons. The rate of negative net-migration was 0.02%, down 0.03 points from the previous year.
