Summary of the Results of Internal Migration in 2016

The number of inter-prefectural migrants has decreased for the first time since 2014, the rate of migration was down from the previous year
- The number of Japanese internal migrants was 4,880,967 and the rate of migration was 3.90%, down 0.12 points from the previous year.
- The number of Japanese inter-prefectural migrants was 2,275,331, a decrease for the first time since 2014. The rate of migration was 1.82%, down 0.04 points from the previous year.
- The number of Japanese intra-prefectural migrants was 2,605,636, a decrease for the first time since 2014. The rate of migration was 2.08%, down 0.08 points from the previous year.
The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo-to has decreased for the first time since 2011, and the number for Kanagawa-ken has decreased for the first time since 2012.
- Regarding the net-migration for prefectures, seven prefectures had positive net-migration in 2016: Tokyo-to (74,177 persons), Chiba-ken (16,075 persons), Saitama-ken (15,560 persons), and so on. The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo-to has decreased for the first time since 2011, and the number for Kanagawa-ken has decreased for the first time since 2012. The rate of positive net-migration in Tokyo-to (0.56%) was the highest, followed by Chiba-ken (0.26%), and so on. The rate of positive net-migration in Tokyo-to, Kanagawa-ken, Aichi-ken and Osaka-fu was down from the previous year.
- On the other hand, forty prefectures had negative net-migration in 2016: Hokkai-do (6,874 persons), Kumamoto-ken (6,791 persons), Hyogo-ken (6,760 persons), and so on. Compared with the previous year, the number of negative net-migration in Fukushima-ken increased by 3,444 persons, and the number in Kumamoto-ken increased by 2,858 persons. The rate of negative net-migration in Aomori-ken (0.49%) was the highest, followed by Akita-ken (0.44%), Nagasaki-ken (0.41%), and so on.
The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo Area has decreased for the first time since 2011. Nagoya Area and Osaka Area had negative net-migration for the fourth straight year
- The net-migration for all three major metropolitan areas (Tokyo Area, Nagoya Area and Osaka Area) had a positive net-migration of 106,170 persons. Compared with the previous year, positive net-migration decreased by 2,743 persons for these areas. This was the first decrease since 2012.
- The Tokyo Area had a positive net-migration of 117,868 persons. This was the first decrease since 2011. The rate of positive net-migration was 0.33%, down 0.01 points from the previous year.
- The Nagoya Area had a negative net-migration of 2,363 persons. This was the fourth straight year. The rate of negative net-migration was 0.02%, up 0.01 points from the previous year.
- The Osaka Area had a negative net-migration of 9,335 persons. This was the fourth straight year. The rate of negative net-migration was 0.05%, unchanged from the previous year.
The total number of negative net-migration for Iwate-ken, Miyagi-ken and Fukushima-ken was 10,192, increased by 3,599 persons from the previous year
- The total number of negative net-migration for Iwate-ken, Miyagi-ken and Fukushima-ken was 10,192. Compared with the previous year, negative net-migration increased by 3,599 persons in these areas.
- Each of the three prefectures had negative net-migration, which was unchanged from the previous year.
