2 Population and Households 37Life Tables (Fundamental Statistics) A Life Table expresses the probability that each person, classified by age, will die within one year, and the expectation of how many years on average this person could live, etc., by indexes such as age-sex-specific death rate and expectation of life, according to assumptions that the probability of death in a period of time would not change in future. Average life expectancy, the life expectancy at age 0 years, consolidates circumstances of death. It is widely used as a comprehensive indicator of the level of health and welfare and is published by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Life Tables consist of the "Complete Life Table" (fundamental statistics) and "Abridged Life Table" (fundamental statistics) for the whole country, the "Life Table by Prefecture" for prefectures and designated cities, and the "Life Table by Municipality" for municipalities. This chapter covers statistical tables using the "Complete Life Table" and "Abridged Life Table." Complete Life Table Complete Life Table has been constructed every five years based on the Annual Vital Statistics and the Population Census. It has been published from the first issue for 1891 to 1898 through the twenty-third one for 2020. Abridged Life Tables Abridged Life Tables has been constructed every years based on the Provisional Annual Vital Statistics and the Population Estimates. Report on Internal Migration in Japan Derived from the Basic Resident Registration The Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications collects monthly such information as former address and sex of the in-migrants who were registered at the new address by notification, and compiles statistics on the internal migration. It excludes those persons who moved within the boundary of a local municipality or whose previous addresses were unknown. Though the records on foreigners became registered on the basic resident register network system due to the amendment of the Residential Basic Book Act, only the results on Japanese migrants are shown in this chapter. Immigration Control Statistics This statistics is compiled and published by the Immigration Services Agency in order to clarify the processing status of the affairs under its jurisdiction, and to serve as basic data for policies. The statistics compiled monthly and annually based on reports submitted by Regional Immigration Bureaus, their branches and sub-branches. This chapter covers the number of persons who entered or departed from Japan by nationality. See the Glossary for Terms in this chapter.
