25 Education 25 Education 629 This chapter covers school education and social education. For school education, statistics on the fundamental elements of school education such as the number of schools, students enrolled, teachers, etc. as well as educational expenditure are presented. For social education, statistics on personnel engaged in social education, and on institutions for social education such as citizen's public halls are presented. For educational expenses in the household expenditure, see "22 Family Income and Expenditure", and for statistics on libraries and museums, see "26 Culture". School Basic Survey (Fundamental Statistical Survey) This survey has been conducted annually since 1948 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for the purpose of obtaining basic data for school education administration by researching basic matters related to schools such as the number of schools, number of students enrolled, number of graduates, number of teachers, school facilities, school expenditures, status after graduation, etc. The survey comprises six survey components, i.e. survey on school particulars, correspondence courses, school-age children not attending school, school facilities, school expenditures, and on the first destination of new graduates. The survey is conducted at kindergartens, integrated centres for early childhood education and care, elementary schools, lower secondary schools, compulsory education schools, upper secondary schools, secondary schools, schools for special needs education, universities, junior colleges, colleges of technology, specialised training colleges and miscellaneous schools as of 1 May (or previous fiscal year for the survey on school-age children not attending school and school expenditures). Survey of Social Welfare Institutions See "23 Social Security". This chapter covers the number of day nurseries along with their workers and infants enrolled by prefecture, as well as the number of regional childcare facilities along with their workers and infants enrolled by prefecture. Basic Survey of Educational Corporations and Basic Survey of Educational Corporations and Others These surveys are conducted annually by the Promotion and Mutual Aid Corporation for Private Schools of Japan to provide basic and reference materials for the operations of the Corporation, as well as materials for budget requests related to private schools, by identifying the financial and educational conditions of private schools and to provide them as reference materials for the management of educational corporations. The Basic Survey of Educational Corporations covers universities, junior colleges, colleges of technology, upper secondary schools, secondary schools, lower secondary schools, compulsory education schools, and elementary schools. The Basic Survey of Educational Corporations and Others covers educational corporations and other corporations and individuals who establish schools for special needs education, kindergartens, specialised training colleges, and miscellaneous schools. Financial data are compiled as "Current Private school Finances". This chapter covers revenue and expenditure for kindergartens, elementary schools, lower secondary schools, upper secondary schools, special needs education, junior colleges, and universities (Schools are treated as accounting units as stipulated by articles 13 and 24 of the Accounting Standard for educational corporations.).
