9 Mining and Manufacturing 279Domestic Production Volume Statistics This statistics has been surveyed and released by the Japan Canners Association for the data on domestic production volume of canned foods, bottled foods and retort pouch foods for the last 10 years. This chapter covers production quantities of canned food, canned fishery products, canned fruit, bottled food, bottled jam, and retort pouch foods. Survey on Processed Meat Products Marketing This survey is released by the Japan Ham and Sausage Processors Cooperative Association monthly and annually. The survey compiles production volumes reported by meat processing plants. This chapter covers ham, sausage, and bacon production. Indices of Industrial Production (IIP) These indices are released monthly by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) based on the Current Survey of Production of METI and other data. The indices are compiled for the purpose of assessing activities related to production, shipment, and inventory at domestic places of business that produce industrial products, the operating status of manufacturing facilities, and trends in the production capacities of various facilities. The base period for the present indices is 2020, and calculation uses the Laspeyres formula. The base year is revised every five years. The weights are based on the Economic Census for Business Activity. The IIP includes the following series. Indices of Industrial Production and Shipments The Indices of Industrial Production show the overall level of industrial production activities, while the Indices of Shipments show the overall shipment trend of products produced through industrial production activities, thereby monitoring trends in demand for industrial products. The number of items adopted is 408, and the weights are value-added weights for the Indices of Industrial Production and shipment weights for the Indices of Shipments. Indices of Inventory and Inventory Ratio The Indices of Inventory show trends in inventories that have not been shipped and remain at the producer level. The Indices of Inventory Ratio show the supply and demand situation of products produced through production activities by looking at the ratio of inventories to shipments. The number of items adopted is 291 for the Indices of Inventory and 283 for the Indices of Inventory Ratio. Inventory value weights are used for both the Indices of Inventory and Indices of Inventory Ratio. Indices of Production Capacity The Indices of Production Capacity are indices of the manufacturing industry's production capacity, which is defined as the maximum production volume that can be produced under standard conditions by setting certain criteria for the number of operating days, equipment, and labour force. The number of items adopted is 139 items, and the weights are value-added weights of capacity. Indices of Operating Ratio The Indices of Operating Ratio are indices derived from the ratio of production volume to production capacity to represent the operating status of manufacturing facilities. The number of items adopted is 139, and the weights are value-added weights of production performance. See the Glossary for Terms in this chapter.
