Forest and Forestry Statistics Handbook This handbook is a wide-ranging collection of statistics published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as well as relevant ministries and agencies, statistics produced by various organisations, major international statistics, and operational data produced by each section of the Forestry Agency in order to grasp the current situation of Japan's forests, forestry, and wood industries. The handbook is published by the Forestry Agency. This chapter contains the area of protected forests. Survey of Lumber (Fundamental Statistical Survey) This survey is conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries with the aim to clarify the production and shipping of logs and lumber, and to obtain basic materials for forestry policy. The survey is composed of the Basic Survey (annual survey), Monthly Survey of Sawing and Survey of Veneer and Plywood. This chapter contains the Basic Survey (annual survey). The survey was conducted on sawmilling plants (plants with a power output for sawmilling of 7.5 kw or more), woodchip plants, plywood plants, LVL plants, laminated wood plants, and CLT plants throughout Japan. The survey targeted those operating as of 31 December of the survey year and those temporarily closed but whose period of closure began on or after 1 October of the survey year. Production statistics investigation on Non-Wood Forest Products This survey is conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for the purpose of continuously grasping the actual conditions of fluctuations in the production, etc. of special forest products in prefectures, promoting measures for stabilizing supply and demand by analysing the survey results, and obtaining basic data necessary for providing information to producers and consumers. The survey is conducted for all producers of special forest products known to prefectures. However, if agricultural cooperatives, forest cooperatives, dealers, or processors hold information on the survey items, they are subject to the survey. The survey items are (1) production volume, number of producers, etc. of mushrooms; (2) breakdown of mushroom shipping destinations; (3) amount of shiitake mushrooms, etc. planted on logs; (4) breakdown of shiitake mushroom producers by size, etc.; (5) shiitake mushroom production facilities, etc.; (6) production volume, number of producers, etc. of charcoal, etc.; and (7) production volume, etc. of other special forest products. Wood Demand and Supply Chart The Wood Demand and Supply Chart is published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for the purpose of clarifying the state of supply and demand of timber and the self-sufficiency rate of timber in Japan every year by utilizing the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' "Survey of Lumber," the Ministry of Finance's "Trade Statistics," the Forestry Agency's "Survey of Supply and Demand Dynamics of Specialty Forest Products," and the "Survey on Woody Biomass Energy Use Trends." Total Forestry Output The Total Forestry Output is made public by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for the purpose of clarifying the actual state of forestry production through assessment in terms of value and providing data that contributes to the planning of forestry administration, as well as the follow-up of its implementation.
