Survey of Cultivated Area The survey as of 15 July, covers targeted at paddy fields cultivated land and fields cultivated land in Japan. However, the survey period for the area of expansion and dilapidation is one year from 15 July of the previous year to 14 July of the referred year. Survey of Planted Area The survey covers paddy field rice and other crops (upland rice, wheat and barley, soybeans, buckwheat, rapeseed, sweet potatoes, forage crops, oats (for green manure), fruits and nuts, tea, sugar beets, and sugar cane). The survey is conducted for paddy field rice, fruits and nuts, and tea as of 15 July every year, for soybeans as of 1 September every year, and for other crops as of the harvest time. However, for many crops other than paddy field rice, national surveys are conducted every three or six years, and surveys of major producing prefectures are conducted in other years. Surveys of major producing prefectures cover the top prefectures that account for approximately 80% of the planted area of Japan for each survey item. Yield Survey The Yield Survey consists of the Survey on Growing Conditions (for paddy rice), the Survey on Forecast of Crop Production (for paddy rice) and the Survey of Crop Production (paddy field rice and upland rice, wheat and barley, soybean, buckwheat, rape seeds, sweet potato, forage crop, crops for sugar, tea, fruits, vegetables and flower). This chapter contains Survey of Crop Production. Survey of Crop Production As of the harvest season, the following surveys are conducted nationwide. However, for many crops other than paddy field rice, national surveys are conducted every three or six years, and surveys of major producing prefectures are conducted in other years. Yield Survey (paddy field rice and upland rice, wheat and barley, soybean, buckwheat, sweet potato, forage crop, industrial crops) The purpose of the survey is to provide basic data for agricultural administration by clarifying the actual situation of crop production in order to formulate production effort targets in the Basic Plan for Food, Agriculture and Rural Areas and verify their status of achievement, calculate subsidies for management income stabilization measures, advance various projects contributing to the promotion of crop production, and appropriately manage agricultural mutual aid projects based on the Agricultural Insurance Act. The survey covers paddy field rice, wheat and barley (wheat and soybeans, etc.), upland rice, sweet potatoes, forage crops (grass and maize, etc.), tea, sugar beets, and sugar cane. Yield Survey (fruit and nuts) The purpose of this survey is to clarify the actual situation of fruit tree production, to formulate targets for fruit production efforts in the Basic Plan for Food, Agriculture and Rural Areas and to verify their status of achievement, and to provide data for the appropriate management of fruit tree mutual aid projects based on the Agricultural Insurance Act. The survey covers mandarin oranges, apples, Japanese pears, peaches, Japanese apricots, grapes, etc. Yield Survey (vegetables) The purpose of this survey is to clarify the actual situation of vegetable production; to establish and verify important performance indicators such as production volume and acreage for each item in the Basic Plan for Food, Agriculture and Rural Areas; to promote various projects that contribute to the promotion of vegetable production; and to prepare materials for calculating the amount of mutual aid for field crop mutual aid projects based on the Agricultural Insurance Act. The survey covers 14 designated vegetables (daikon radishes, carrots, napa cabbage, cabbage, cucumbers, and eggplants) and 27 quasi-designated vegetables (edible burdocks, pumpkins and squashes, strawberries, and melons). Yield Survey (flowers) The purpose of this survey is to clarify the present state of and trends in the planted (harvested) area and amount of shipment of flowers and to provide data for various measures to be promoted in
