TOPIX (Tokyo Stock Price Index) TOPIX is a market benchmark with functionality as an investable index, covering an extensive proportion of the Japanese stock market. TOPIX shows the measure of current market capitalization assuming that market capitalization as of the base date (4 January 1968) is 100 points. In line with the review of market segments in April 2022, stock price indices such as TOPIX (Tokyo Stock Price Index) will be reviewed and shifted in stages. Nikkei Stock Average The Nikkei 225 is the stock market index calculated and published by a Japanese newspaper publisher Nikkei Inc. It is comprised of the 225 highly liquid stocks of the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market and the constituents are selected by considering the weights of the industrial sectors. 16 Finance and Insurance 372 16 金融・保険 This chapter contains finance, public and corporate bonds, stocks and insurance. The section on finance contains statistics on deposit and lending by financial institutions, and various kinds of interest rates. The section on public and corporate bonds and stocks contains statistics on the flotation of national government bonds, public and corporate bonds as well as statistics on security exchanges. The section on insurance contains statistics on life and non-life insurance business. Further, for currency and flow of funds, see "4 Currency and Flow of Funds", for suspension of business with banks, see "7 Business Activities" and for social insurance, see "23 Social Security". Financial statistics Basic loan rates Various interest rates are currently determined by arbitrage in the financial markets. Under these circumstances, the former official discount rates, now called basic loan rates, serve as the applicable interest rates for Lombard-type lending and define the upper limit of the unsecured call rate (overnight). Assets and liabilities of domestically licensed banks Domestically licensed banks refer to banks which are established and licensed under the Japanese legislation (excluding the Bank of Japan and government-related organisations). Loans and bills discounted by sector (industries, etc.) The classification of industry follows the Japan Standard Industrial Classification, and is determined by the main industry (the industry occupying largest weight in the total sales during past one year) of the borrower. Equipment funds refer to funds invested in tangible fixed assets whose durable life exceeds one year. Loans to households Housing loans Loans to households for the purchase of housing (excluding purchases for business purposes). Installment repayments are repayments that continue for at least 2 months and require at least 3 installments. These include not only loans for construction, rebuilding, and purchases of homes, but also those for purchases of land for residential use. Consumer loans Loans to households for purchase of consumer goods and services (excluding purchases for business purposes). Total of loans with installment repayments and card loans (overdraft-type card loans consumer loans based on the small-amount financing system for workers, and cash advance loans). Consumer loans include loans for nonspecified consumer expenses.
