As forOkinawa Prefecture from 1 October 1971 to 14 May 1972, data are based on the Migration Statistics compiled by the StatisticsAgency of the Ryukyu Government. From October 1965, excluding foreign immigrants and emigrants for short stay in Japan.From October 2005, excluding Japanese emigrants and immigrants for short stay abroad. 4) For the years other than those of thepopulation census, the population density is calculated using "Land Survey of Prefectures, Shi, Ku, Machi and Mura" compiledby the Geographical Survey Institute of which area measurement methods were changed from 2014. From 1945, the area used forthe calculation of density excludes Habomai Islands, Shikotan Island, Kunashiri Island, Etrofu Island and Take-shima.a) Census population. b) Adjusted population obtained by deducting 1,181,000 military and civilian personnel outside Japanfrom the census population of 73,114,308. c) Adjusted population obtained by adding the estimated 149,000 of military andcivilian personnel and foreigners to population by the Population Survey of 71,998,104 as of 1 November. d) Computed fromthe 1944 population of 73,839,000 which excludes Okinawa Prefecture. e) Adjusted population obtained by adding theestimated 3,000 in the flooded areas to the Extraordinary Population Census of 78,098,000. f) Census population.
