Marine transport Survey on Coastwise Vessel Transport (Fundamental Statistical Survey) This survey is conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to clarify the conditions of freight transport by vessel engaged in coastal shipping and to provide basic data for policies on economics, traffic, etc. These statistics are derived from the Survey on Coastwise Vessel Transport, which covers carriers that transport cargo using vessels with a total tonnage of at least twenty tons among carriers engaged in coastal transportation business as stipulated in the Coastal Shipping Business Act, and the Survey on Transportation by Vessels for Private Use, which covers vessels with a total tonnage of at least one hundred tons or at least thirty metres among carriers that transport cargo using private vessels as stipulated in the Coastal Shipping Business Act. Air transport Survey on Air Transport This survey is conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to clarify the conditions of air transport business and airplane-using business, and to provide basic data for policies on economics, traffic, etc. It consists of the Survey on Operating Hours of Aircraft, the Survey on Air Transport by Domestic Lines, and the Survey on Air Transport by International Lines. The survey covers all the air transport companies and airplane-using companies authorised under the provisions of the Civil Aeronautics Act. Tourism Data are obtained from "Visitor arrivals" published by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). The number of foreign visitors to Japan is compiled by JNTO on the basis of the statistics of the Ministry of Justice. Foreign visitors to Japan Based on the immigration statistics by nationality, which are compiled by the Ministry of Justice, the number is obtained by subtracting foreign immigrants who live in Japan from the authorised foreign immigrants, then adding temporary immigrants etc. who enter Japan temporarily on the way to a third country. Tourists Foreigners entering Japan for a short stay, excluding those for business. Those visiting relatives or friends are included. Accommodation Survey This survey is conducted by the Japan Tourism Agency on accommodation facilities in order to clarify the conditions of overnight travel in Japan and to obtain basic data for policy on tourism. The survey covers hotels, Japanese-style hotels (ryokan), budget hotels, and the lodgings of firms, groups, etc. Travel and Tourism Consumption Trend Survey This survey is conducted by the Japan Tourism Agency to clarify the conditions of domestic travel by Japanese tourists. The survey covers 26,000 domestic residents in Japan, sampled from the Basic Resident Register.
