2021 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities (Results on Time Use by Detailed Activity Coding) released
The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) conducted the 2021 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities as of October 2021 and released the results concerning the time use by detailed activity coding on December 14, 2022.
The Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities aims to obtain comprehensive data on daily patterns of time allocation and on leisure activities over a year. The survey has been conducted every five years since 1976, and the 2021 survey was the tenth.
The results are based on Questionnaire B, which covered approximately 10,000 people, and show the allocation of time use according to the detailed activity classification, and can be compared with the activity classification of the HETUS (Harmonised European Time Use Surveys).
- Simultaneous activities
Looking at participation rate by kind of simultaneous activity (activity done at the same time as a main activity), "Computing," which includes using smartphones, was higher than "Watching TV," and marked the highest rate for the first time.
- Unpaid work
Among types of Housework, "Management of meals" was the highest proportion among both males and females.
Looking at Child care time of husbands and wives who have a child or children under the age of 6, "Physical care or supervision of a baby and a little child" time was the longest.
- Time spent with their child
In a household of a couple with their child(ren) under the age of 6, compared to 5 years ago, time spent with their child(ren) increased among husbands and decreased among wives on Saturdays and Sundays.
- Place of activities
Compared to 5 years ago, time spent at home increased for 50 minutes in all age groups, with the age group of 25 to 29 years old showing the largest increase, of 1 hour and 58 minutes.

On December 13, Mr. Kaveh Zahedi, Deputy Executive Secretary and Ms. Rachael Beaven, Director of Statistics Division of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) visited the Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ). They exchanged greetings with Mr. INOUE Takashi, Director-General of the SBJ.

Study visit delegates from the GSO of Viet Nam visited the SBJ
On December 14 and 15, a 13-member of study visit delegates from the General Statistics Office (GSO) of Viet Nam, headed by Mr. Nguyen Trung Tien, Deputy Director General of GSO visited the SBJ. They received lectures such as "2020 Population Census in Japan" and "Outline of Population Estimates."

On December 16, Dr. HAN Hoon, Commissioner of Statistics Korea visited the SBJ. He exchanged greetings with Mr. INOUE Takashi, Director-General of the SBJ.

- The total population was 125,125 thousand, a decrease of 557 thousand (0.44%) from the previous year.
