New release of the Japan Statistical Yearbook 2023
The Japan Statistical Yearbook is a comprehensive and systematic compendium of basic statistical information of Japan covering wide-ranging fields such as land, population, economy, society and culture.
The yearbook covers many fields of statistics published by the government and private organizations.
This volume contains 30 fields, 542 tables, including outline of the survey and explanation of terms in each section.
As the statistical tables in the yearbook are available in English, it can be useful as a tool for introducing information on Japan.

The SBJ co-hosted the 31st Population Census Conference in Tokyo
From November 29 to December 1, 2022, the Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) co-hosted the 31st Population Census Conference in Tokyo, Japan, with the Association of National Census and Statistics Directors of America, Asia and the Pacific (ANCSDAAP).
The Conference was attended by around 40 face-to-face participants and four online participants from 20 countries and international organizations. The theme of the Conference was "The Impact of COVID-19 on the 2020 Round of Censuses and How to Overcome the Ensuing Challenges."
The Conference started with an opening remark by Ms. OMI Asako, State Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan, followed by a speech by Dr. Vu Thi THU THUY, President of ANCSDAAP.
During the Conference, which consisted of nine sessions, the participants engaged in lively discussions in relation to the experiences of the impacts and future challenges of the implementation of the population census under the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based on the discussion at the meeting of the Board of Directors of ANCSDAAP, which was held during the Conference, it was decided that the next Population Census Conference will be held in Mongolia in 2024.

- The consumer price index for Japan was 103.7 (2020=100), up 3.7% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.6% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

- The total population was 125,104 thousand, a decrease of 618 thousand (0.49%) from the previous year.

- The population aged 15 to 64 was 74,257 thousand, a decrease of 437 thousand (0.59%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 65 and over was 36,250 thousand, an increase of 87 thousand (0.24%) from the previous year.
- The Japanese population was 122,272 thousand, a decrease of 680 thousand (0.55%) from the previous year.

"Consumer Price Index" (Preliminary, 2020-base, Ku-area of Tokyo, November 2022)
- The consumer price index for Ku-area of Tokyo (preliminary) was 103.8 (2020=100), up 3.8% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.5% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

- The number of internal migrants was 369,589, an increase of 12,700 (3.6%) from the previous year.
