The 31st Population Census Conference to be held in Tokyo, Japan
The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) and the Association of National Census and Statistics Directors of America, Asia and the Pacific (ANCSDAAP) will co-host the 31st Population Census Conference in Tokyo from November 29 to December 1, 2022.
The Population Census Conference started in 1971, advocated by the East-West Center (EWC) in Hawaii, USA, and the Conference has been conducted approximately once every two years. The purpose of the conference is to share experience and methods for the collection and use of population census and related statistical information among the countries of America, Asia and the Pacific.
The 31st conference will be the first in-person conference after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and held under the following theme: "The Impact of COVID-19 on the 2020 Round of Censuses and How to Overcome the Ensuing Challenges".

"Population Estimates" (Final estimates, Japan, May 1, 2022)
- The total population was 125,072 thousand, a decrease of 704 thousand (0.56%) from the previous year.
- The population under 15 years old was 14,623 thousand, a decrease of 266 thousand (1.79%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 15 to 64 was 74,200 thousand, a decrease of 533 thousand (0.71%) from the previous year.
- The population aged 65 and over was 36,249 thousand, an increase of 95 thousand (0.26%) from the previous year.
- The Japanese population was 122,325 thousand, a decrease of 672 thousand (0.55%) from the previous year.

- The total population was 124.83 million, a decrease of 0.67 million (0.53%) from the previous year.

- The consumer price index for Japan was 103.1 (2020=100), up 3.0% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.3% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

- The number of internal migrants was 358,962, an increase of 12,296 (3.5%) from the previous year.

- The number of internal migrants was 318,047, an increase of 1,565 (0.5%) from the previous year.

- The number of intra-prefectural migrants was 178,587, a decrease of 1,384 (0.8%) from the previous year.
