2021 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities (Results on Time Use and Leisure Activities) released
The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) conducted the 2021 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities as of October, 2021, and released the results concerning time use and leisure activities on August 31, 2022.
The Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities aims to obtain comprehensive data on daily patterns of time allocation and on leisure activities. The survey has been conducted every five years since 1976, and the 2021 survey was the tenth.
- Time spent on rest and relaxation increased by 20 minutes compared to 5 years ago, while time spent on moving (excluding commuting), watching TV/ listening to the radio/ reading newspapers or magazines, and social life decreased by 7 minutes respectively.
- For husbands in households with children under 6 years old, housework time increased by 13 minutes and time for child care increased by 16 minutes during the past five years. The gender gap is narrowing but still present for a certain amount of time.
- Of the working persons whose designated day of time use was a weekday when they had work (excluding days for business trips, training, etc.), 6.7% of all respondents teleworked (worked remotely).
- Compared to those who did not telework, those who teleworked spent more time on sleep and hobbies and amusements, and less time on commuting to and from school or work and personal care.
While commuting time decreased due to teleworking, time on sleep, hobbies and amusements increased for those aged 25 to 34 years old, child care for those aged 35-44, and sleep and meals for those aged 45-54, respectively. - Time spent alone increased for all age groups compared to five years ago. Time spent with family members, classmate(s) or colleague(s) generally decreased in all age groups.
[Results on Leisure Activities]
- Learning, self-education and training
The percentage in the population of those aged ten and over (hereinafter referred to as "participation rate") was 39.6%. Compared to 2016, the participation rate increased by 2.7 percentage points. By age group, the participation rate increased in all age groups except for those of 70 to 74 years old.
Among males, the participation rate of "Computing etc." was the highest, and among females, the participation rate of "Home economics or housework" was the highest.
- Volunteer activities
The participation rate of "Volunteer activities" was 17.8%. Compared to 2016, the participation rate decreased by 8.2 percentage points.
The participation rate of "Disaster-related activities" was high in Kumamoto prefecture, Saga prefecture and Nagano prefecture.
- Sports
The participation rate of "Walking or light physical exercise" and "Cycling" increased from five years ago, while the participation rate of "Bowling," "Swimming" and most other sports decreased.
- Hobbies and amusements
The participation rate of "Playing games on a smartphone, home video game consoles, etc." and "Listening to music on CD or smartphone, etc." increased from 2016, while the participation rate of "Karaoke" and "Visiting recreation ground, zoo, arboretum, or aquarium, etc." decreased significantly.
- Travel and excursion
The participation rate of "Travel and excursion" was 49.5%, a significant drop of 24.0 percentage points from 2016.
