The Preliminary Result of the 2021 Economic Census for Business Activity Released
On 31 May 2022, the SBJ and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) released the preliminary results of the 2021 Economic Census for Business Activity.
The objectives of the Economic Census for Business Activity are, by investigating the economic activity of establishments and enterprises, to identify the structure of establishments and enterprises in all industries on a national and regional level, and to obtain basic information for conducting various statistical surveys.
As for this survey, accounting matters, including the amount of sales (income) (hereinafter referred to as "sales") and expenses, are the values for the year 2020, whereas matters other than accounting matters, including the number of establishments, "enterprises, etc." and persons engaged, are the values as of June 1, 2021.
- The amount of sales in Japan was 1702.0201 trillion yen, and that of net added value was 337.1437 trillion yen.
- As of June 1, 2021, the number of "enterprises, etc." in Japan was 3,674 thousand. The number of privately owned establishments was 5,079 thousand, and the number of persons engaged was 57,458 thousand.
- Looking at the number of "enterprises, etc." by industrial division, the largest was "Wholesale and Retail Trade" at 740 thousand (20.1% of all industries), followed by "Construction" at 424 thousand (11.5%), and "Accommodations, Eating and Drinking Services" at 423 thousand (11.5%), resulting in the top three industries accounting for 43.2% of all industries. The number of "enterprises, etc." from "Tertiary industries" accounted for 78.2% of all industries.
- Looking at sales by industrial division, the largest was "Wholesale and Retail Trade" at 481.4654 trillion yen (28.3% of all industries), followed by "Manufacturing" at 390.9934 trillion yen (23.0%), and "Medical, Health Care and Welfare" at 173.1927 trillion yen (10.2%), resulting in the top three industries accounting for 61.4% of all industries. The sales arising from "Tertiary industries" accounted for 69.5% of all industries.
- Looking at the amount of net added value by industrial division, the amount was the largest for "Medical, Health Care and Welfare" at 71.2916 trillion yen (21.1% of all industries), followed by "Manufacturing" at 65.1543 trillion yen (19.3%), and "Wholesale and Retail Trade" at 48.5584 trillion yen (14.4%), resulting in the top three industries accounting for 54.9% of all industries. The net added value arising from "Tertiary industries" accounted for 73.2% of all industries.
