New release of the Japan Statistical Yearbook 2022
The Japan Statistical Yearbook is a comprehensive and systematic compendium of basic statistical information of Japan covering wide-ranging fields such as land, population, economy, society and culture.
The yearbook covers many fields of statistics published by the government and private organizations.
This volume contains 30 fields and 542 tables, including an outline of the surveys and explanations of terms in each section.
As the statistical tables in the yearbook are available in English, it can be useful as a tool for introducing information on Japan.

RECENT RELEASES
"Survey of Research and Development" (2021)
- R&D Expenditure
Japan's total expenditure on R&D during fiscal year (FY) 2020 stood at 19.24 trillion yen, a 1.7 percent decrease from the previous fiscal year. It has decreased for the first time in four years.
Expenditure on R&D as a percentage of GDP was 3.59 percent, a 0.08 percentage point increase from the previous fiscal year. - R&D Personnel
As of 31 March 2021, the total number of researchers is 890,500, a 1.1 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. It has increased for five consecutive years, and now the highest ever.
The number of female researchers (head count) is 166,300, a 4.6 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. It also accounts for 17.5 percent of the total researchers. This figure is the highest ever. - Technology Balance of Payments
With regard to technology balance of payments by business enterprises, receipts from technology exports stood at 3.10 trillion yen, a decrease of 15.3 percent from the previous fiscal year. It has decreased for three consecutive years.

"Population Estimates" (Final estimates, July 1, 2021)
- The total population was 125,682 thousand.
- The population under 15 years old was 14,849 thousand (11.8% of the total population).
- The population aged 15 to 64 was 74, 658 thousand (59.4% of the total population).
- The population aged 65 and over was 36,175 thousand (28.8% of the total population).
- Japanese population was 122,928 thousand.

- The total population was 125.47 million, a decrease of 0.62 million (0.49%) from the previous year.

- The number of internal migrants was 359,777, an increase of 17,310 (5.1%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants was 149,003, an increase of 8,772 (6.3%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants was 210,774, an increase of 8,538 (4.2%) from the previous year.
- The number of internal migrants was 328,179, an increase of 15,190 (4.9%) from the previous year.
- The number of inter-prefectural migrants was 131,523, an increase of 6,597 (5.3%) from the previous year.
- The number of intra-prefectural migrants was 196,656, an increase of 8,593 (4.6%) from the previous year.

- The consumer price index for Japan was 100.1 (2020=100), up 0.6% over the year before seasonal adjustment, and up 0.3% from the previous month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

The average of monthly income per household stood at 481,838 yen, up 1.8% in nominal terms and up 1.1% in real terms from the previous year.
The average of consumption expenditures per household was 304,207 yen, down 0.4% in nominal terms and down 1.1% in real terms from the previous year.
