NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The Statistics Bureau of Japan (SBJ) hosted the 25th Meeting of the Wiesbaden Group on Business Registers

  The 25th meeting of the Wiesbaden Group on Business Registers was held from November 8 to 11, 2016, in Tokyo, and hosted by the SBJ. The meeting gathered 77 participants from 41 countries and 6 international organizations, including the participants of the Workshop on Statistical Business Registers for Developing Countries co-organized by the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (UNSIAP) and the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) in collaboration with the SBJ.

  The meeting started with an opening address by Mr. Kenji HARADA, State Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications. The participants engaged in lively discussions during the meeting which consisted of 7 general sessions and one special session. For colleagues around the world, who were not able to attend the meeting, live streaming was available during this meeting. It was the first time such a system has been introduced in the Wiesbaden Group meetings.

  The meeting provided an important opportunity for business register experts across the world to exchange updated information on the development, maintenance and use of business registers.

Basic Complete Tabulation on Population and Households of the 2015 Population Census of Japan was released

  On October, 26, 2016, Basic Complete Tabulation on Population and Household of the 2015 Population Census of Japan was released.
  Based on the results of the complete count of questionnaires, the tabulation includes statistics on basic characteristics of population and households, statistics on housing conditions of household, statistics on foreigners, and statistics on households with aged household members, for the whole of Japan, prefectures, and municipalities.

- Population

  The population of Japan as of October 1, 2015, was 127,094,745 a decline of 962,607 (0.8%) from 2010, or 0.15% on an annual basis. This was the first decline since the Population Census was begun in 1920.
  Broken down by sex, the male and female population numbered 61,841,738 and 65,253,007, respectively, and the sex ratio was 94.8.
  The population of Japanese citizens was 124,283,901 (98.6% of the total population), a decline of 1,074,953 (0.9%) from 2010, or 0.17% on an annual basis.
  The population of foreign residents usually living in Japan was 1,752,368 (1.4% of the total population), an increase of 104,331 (6.3%) from 2010, or 1.24% on an annual basis.
  Among the 47 prefectures, the population increased in 8 prefectures (Okinawa-ken was the highest increase rate [2.9%], followed by Tokyo-to [2.7%], Saitama-ken and Aichi-ken [1.0%]), while it decreased in 39 prefectures. Among 1,719 municipalities, the population decreased in 1,419 municipalities (82.5% of municipalities).

- Population by age group

  The population under 15 years old was 15,886,810 (12.6% of the total population), those aged 15 to 64 totaled 76,288,736 (60.7%), and those aged 65 years old and over numbered 3,3465,441 (26.6%).
  The percentage of the population under 15 years old was the lowest, and that of the population aged 65 years old and over was the highest, since the Population Census was begun in 1920.
  The percentage of the population under 15 years old was the lowest level in the world, and that of the population aged 65 years old and over was the highest level in the world.

- Foreigners

  Looking at the population of foreign residents usually living in Japan (1,752,368) by nationality, "China" was the largest, with 511,118people (accounting for 29.2% of the total of the foreigners), followed by "Korea" with 376,954 (21.5%), "Philippines" with 172,457 (9.8%), and "Brazil" with 126,091 (7.2%).

- Households

  The number of households in Japan was 53,448,685 as of October 1, 2015, an increase of 1,498,181 from 2010.
  The number of members per household of Tokyo-to was 1.99, which was the smallest among the 47 prefectures, falling below 2 for the first time among comparable population census results since 1970.

Unincorporated Enterprise Survey (Trend survey) (July to September 2016)

  • The sales per establishment for July-September 2016 increased by 0.8% in "Wholesale and retail trade", decreased by 9.4% in "Manufacturing ", 4.4% in "Accommodations and food services" and 6.3% in "Services", respectively over the previous year (corresponding period).
  • The net operating profit per establishment for July-September 2016 increased by 6.0% in "Wholesale and retail trade", 13.6% in "Accommodations and food services" and decreased by 14.1% in "Manufacturing ", 4.3% in "Services" respectively over the previous year (corresponding period).

"Monthly Report on Internal Migration in Japan" (October 2016)

  • The number of internal migrants (All nationalities) was 367,684, a decrease of 38,668 (9.5%) from the previous year.
  • The number of inter-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 165,946, a decrease of 13,354 (7.4%) from the previous year.
  • The number of intra-prefectural migrants (All nationalities) was 201,738, a decrease of 25,314 (11.1%) from the previous year.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Two-or-more-person Households: October 2016)

  • Expenditures for Two-or-more-person Households

    The average of monthly consumption expenditures per household for October 2016 was 281,961 yen, down 0.2% in nominal terms and down 0.4% in real terms from the previous year.

  • Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households

    The average of monthly income per household stood at 485,827 yen, up 0.1% in nominal terms but down 0.1% in real terms from the previous year.

    The average of consumption expenditures per household was 305,683 yen, down 1.3% in nominal terms and down 1.5% in real terms from the previous year.
