NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The Project on Improving Official Statistics in Cambodia Entered into Phase III


   Since 2005, the SBJ has been providing support to the National Institute of Statistics (NIS), Ministry of Planning, Cambodia, through an international technical cooperation project to improve the official statistics in Cambodia. The project is funded and coordinated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The organizations involved in the project include the SBJ, the Statistical Research and Training Institute*), the National Statistics Center*), and private consultancy.

   In October 2010, Phase III of the project was started, focusing on support of the first Cambodian Economic Census to be conducted in March 2011. The project will last until March 2015.

   In the earlier stages of this project, Phase I from August 2005 to March 2007 aimed at supporting basic statistical training for the statistical staff of the Cambodian government. Phase II from April 2007 to September 2010 aimed at supporting the planning and implementation of the 2008 Population Census and the 2009 Nationwide Establishment Listing.

   The purpose and main activities of Phase III are as follows.


   *) The Statistical Research and Training Institute is the central training organization on official statistics belonging to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. The National Statistics Center is the organization specialized in statistical data processing for the Government as well as the SBJ.

Project Purpose

   The purpose of Phase III of the project is to provide support for NIS and provincial planning departments to build capacity to implement the 2011 Economic Census, the 2013 inter-censal population survey, the 2014 sample survey on the economy, and other statistical activities.


Main Activities

(1) Dispatch of Statistical Experts to Cambodia

   The SBJ and other organizations dispatch experts to the NIS to implement the project.

   The experts will give advice and trainings to the Cambodian statistical staff in the following two fields;


   1. Planning, data processing including computer programming, analysis and data dissemination of the 2011 Economic Census, 2013 inter-censal population survey and 2014 economic survey.

   2. Small area tabulation, analysis and dissemination in provinces.


   They also give necessary recommendations and advice to the NIS on any matters pertaining to the implementation of the project.


(2) Training of NIS staff in Japan

   NIS staff members will be sent to the SBJ and other official statistical organizations in Japan for training every year, in order to develop core human resources concerning the Economic Census and other statistical surveys in Cambodia.
