Fiscal 2010 Budget for the Statistics Bureau and Director-General for Policy Planning (Statistical Standards) Approved



   The Japanese government's budget for fiscal year 2010 was passed by the Diet on March 24, 2010. The nation's budget for general account spending is approximately 92.3 trillion yen, which marked a record high. The total budget for the Statistics Bureau and the Director-General for Policy Planning (Statistical Standards), excluding regular personnel expenses, is approximately 83.0 billion yen, about three times as much as the 27.7 billion yen which was allocated in the previous fiscal year.

   The major factors of the increase are as follows:

   • The budget for implementation of the 2010 Population Census, which is to be taken as of October 1, climbs to approximately 64.4 billion from 2.1 billion yen in fiscal year 2009.
   • The budget for the management of enumeration districts for the Economic Census*1) and preparation for the 2012 Economic Census for Business Activity is 88.2 million yen, which is newly added.

   *1) The Economic Census comprises the following two types of census.
   ♦ The Economic Census for Business Frame …The census which aims to identify the basic structure of establishments and enterprises of all industries, and to obtain basic information for conducting various statistical surveys, by investigating the economic activity of establishments and enterprises.
   ♦ The Economic Census for Business Activity …The census which aims to reveal accounting items such as the sales amount of all establishments, comprehensively.
