NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

The 12th East Asian Statistical Conference to be held


   The 12th East Asian Statistical Conference will be held from 13 to 15 November 2008 at the United Nations University in Tokyo.

   The Conference aims at promoting development of official statistics in the region through informal exchanges of experiences and thoughts among the chief statisticians of the National Statistical Offices (NSOs) in East Asian Countries.

   The main topics of discussion at the Conference are as follows:


   i) Population Census and Household Surveys
     - New methodologies and improvements in data collection for more accurate enumeration
     - Promoting wider and more advanced use of statistics from the census and the surveys
     - Building on the census as part of a broader program of demographic statistics, such as intercensal population estimates and population projections
     - The role of the census as a potential framework for a household survey program

   ii) Economic Statistics including the Economic Census and Business Registers
     - Use of comprehensive censuses versus a set of surveys in providing the key national economic statistics
     - Use of administrative data for supplementing or replacing the census or surveys
     - Possibility of using the administrative data such as tax records, employment insurance records, and barriers to be overcome
     - Harmonization with international statistical standards, such as SNA Rev.1 and ISIC.

   iii) Management of National Statistical System
     - New developments regarding the framework of the National Statistical System, such as priority setting and resource allocation
     - Engagement of wide range of stakeholders, such as key users, businesses, respondents
     - Incorporating international perspectives in the management of the National Statistical System
