Statistics Day (October, 18) was established by an agreement reached at a Cabinet meeting held July, 3, 1973 in the hope that the Day will encourage every person to acquire a firm interest in and understanding of the importance of statistics, and offer further cooperation with the statistical survey.
Government ministries and agencies including the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and local public bodies are launching publicity activities for Statistics Day, such as preparation of Statistics Day posters, and are also holding a variety of events, such as lectures, exhibitions and award ceremonies for persons who have rendered meritorious services for statistics.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is preparing Statistics Day posters and delivering them to people in order to let people know more about Statistics Day and acquire a firm interest in statistics. Some 60 thousand sheets of the posters have been completed this year, and are ready to be posted up in Government office buildings, prefectural office buildings, municipal office buildings, and other public facilities, such as community centers.
Ideas for a slogan to be put on the poster have been invited from the public since 1990.
The design of the Statistics Day poster and the slogan for the poster will also be widely used in PR articles, publications, envelopes, etc., that are issued for disseminating knowledge about statistics and statistical surveys.
