18 October is 'the Statistics Day'
- 30th Anniversary in 2002 -


1 Introduction


18 October is 'the Statistics Day '.
This day was fixed on 3 July 1973 by the Cabinet for the purpose of strengthening the national concern and understanding to the importance of statistics and promoting their cooperation in the surveys held by  the central and local governments.

The Statistics Day 2002 is the 30th anniversary.

18 October is the day when the Japanese Government proclaimed the order to compile its first modernistic statistics, 'Fuken Bussan-hyo (1) in 1870. (The day was converted from the lunar calendar day, 24 September, to the solar calendar day, 18 October.)

(1) 'Fuken Bussan-hyo' or 'Table of Products by Prefecture' is the statistics which the Government made  from the prefectural reports about farm, forest, marine, mining and industrial products.


2 The Posters for 'the Statistics Day'


Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications posts the posters for 'the Statistics Day' at the offices of the central government, the prefectural governments and the municipal governments in order to publicize the Day and enhance the public's understanding on statistics.
The catchphrase used in the posters was invited from the officials of central and local governments and statistical enumerators. This year's catchphrase "Statistical Surveys Owe You and You Owe Statistical Data" is selected through fair judgment screening among 2,934 applications. This catchphrase also used in publications, envelopes and so on.

3 Events related to 'the Statistics Day'


MIC, other national government ministries and local governments hold lectures and statistical conventions around 'the Statistics Day'. This year the following events are to be held celebrating the 30th anniversary.

(1) The 23rd Public Statistics Symposium of Academics and Practitioners

  • Theme: In Search of Understanding and Cooperation for Statistical Surveys: in Honor of the 30th Anniversary of 'the Statistics Day'.
  • Date: October 18 (Friday), 2002
  • Place: Peare Shinjuku (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo)
  • Organizers: MIC and the National Federation of Statistical Associations (NAFSA)
  • Entrance Fee: Free

(2) Statistics Fair in Memory of the 30th Anniversary of 'the Statistics Day'
- Exhibition of statistical information and data and the works of the winners of the National Statistical Graph Competition and the Tokyo Metropolitan Statistical Graph Competition
- Demonstration of PC software related to statistical procession.

  • Date: October 31 (Thursday) to November 2 (Saturday), 2002
  • Place: Shinjuku station West-exit square Event corner (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo)
  • Organizers: MIC and Tokyo Metropolitan Government
  • Entrance Fee: Free

(3) The 53th National Statistical Convention
- Presentation of Ouch Prize, named after Hyoe OUCH, Professor of Statistics at University of Tokyo and the First Chairman of the Statistics Commission, to those who have contributed to the improvement and development of statistics in Japan
- Commendation to those who have engaged in distinguished service for statistics by each minister
- Presentation of Special Prize of Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to the grand prix winners of the National Statistical Graph
Competition

  • Date: November 14 (Wednesday), 2002
  • Place: Asty Tokushima (Tokushima-city, Tokushima-prefecture)
  • Organizers: NAFSA, Tokushima Prefectural Government, Tokushima City Government and Tokushima Statistical Association under the auspices of MIC
