Publicity to promote the understanding of statistics

The Bureau promotes understanding by the general public concerning the roles of statistics in society, so that the public will cooperate in statistical surveys by the government.
In 1973, the government decided to name 18 October as Statistics Day, in order to enhance the general public's interest in and understanding of the importance of statistics and to obtain greater public cooperation in government statistical surveys.

The date was selected in commemoration of 24 September 1870, on which a Dajokan Fukoku (corresponding to a Cabinet Order today) was promulgated concerning the "Table of Products by Prefecture," the first modern statistical table in Japanese history (24 September 1870 in the old lunar calendar corresponds to 18 October in the solar calendar).

On and around Statistics Day each year, the Bureau holds a variety of events, including a National Competition of Graphic Statistics and a National Statistical Convention (held in a different city each year), in order to enhance the people's understanding of statistics and to attain smoother operation of government statistical surveys.
