Compilation of Input-Output Tables

Input-output tables show the flows of all the goods and services sold and purchased in a country in a given year. All the transactions are compiled into a table cross-classified by the seller (output) and by the purchaser (input). This represents the interrelationships among different sectors of the national economy. The Input-Output Tables for Japan have been prepared every five years since 1955, as a joint undertaking by the government agencies concerned, with the MIC as coordinator.

The latest tables (those for 2000) were prepared jointly by nine government ministries and agencies: Cabinet Office, MIC, Finance Agency, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, Cultere, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Ministry of Land, Infrastraucture and Transport. In 2000, the preliminary tables were published in March and a magnetic tape was released in July. The final report was published in may 2000. The 1985-1990-1995 Linked Input-Output Tables, which consist of tables valued at nominal prices and those valued at constant prices, was published in july 2000. Such tables can facilitate time-series analysis.

In 2000,the government ministries and agencies concerned began to compile tables for 2000.

Also, prefectural tables are compiled by all prefectures with the guidance and cooperation of the MIC.
