2. Income and Expenditures of Dual-income Households

(i) Income

  Average monthly income in the dual-income households was 570,909 yen showing a decrease of 5.0 % on a real basis over the 1999 survey.
  The components of income indicates that the wages and salaries earned by the household head was 388,448 yen (68.0% of income) and those earned by the spouse was 129,615 (22.7% of income). 
  Compared to average monthly income of the single earner households, the level of dual-income households is 133.3 if that of single earner households income is 100, which is lower than the recorded level of 137.2 in the 1999 survey. (Table IV-3)

(ii) Living Expenditures

  Average monthly living expenditures in the dual-income households was 366,758 yen showing a real decrease of 1.2% on a real basis over the 1999 survey.
  Compared to living expenditures of the single earner households, the level of dual-income household expenditures is 119.3 if that of single earner households is 100, which is lower than the recorded level of 121.4 in the 1999 survey.
  Moreover, among the components of the expenditures, the ratio of "other living expenditures" including social expenses in the dual-income households was higher as compared to that of single earner households while the ratios of housing and reading & recreation remained at low levels.
